Krislund Camp and Conference Center in Madisonburg, PA, has an old bell with a new purpose.

This past summer, Bob and Leanne Peters from the Grace United Presbyterian Church in Glen Richey delivered an old church bell to Krislund. What a history the bell has had! And what an even more exciting future!

The bell arrived at Krislund showing the wear of its 130 years. It had hung in the Pine Grove Bethel Church, which was built in 1897. The church had begun as a mission church by the Clearfield congregation, reflecting the time in our country when travel was done with horses which limited the distance people would want to travel to church.

The Pine Grove Bethel Church congregation became independent of Clearfield during its early life. As time and travel changed, the congregation joined the Mountain Top Larger Parish, which included five churches that eventually combined into two churches: Glen Richey and Pine Grove Bethel. After alternating Sunday services for 40 years, the members of the two churches decided in 2012 to merge the two churches and became Grace United Presbyterian Church.

For a time the bell was largely forgotten. The Pine Grove Bethel Church building was fully recycled, and a memorial garden was established on the site. It remains a peaceful reminder of the vibrant congregation that faithfully worshiped there. Meanwhile, the bell was stored in a barn until the Peters delivered it to Krislund a few months ago.

Once the heavy bell was unloaded, Thursday Volunteers began restoring it to new luster. Wire brushes did the job of removing the rust. After several Thursdays of brushing and cleaning, the bell was painted, and a new strong frame was built to hold it. Volunteers placed the bell at the end of the zip line where it has become part of the celebration for those who come down the line. Upon arriving at the end of the zip line the ringing of the bell announces to all that “I did it!”

On a wintry day at a Beaver-Butler Presbytery meeting in January, a ruling elder planted a seed. In a time of anxiety and change and stress, she had a vision of a worship service that would celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation as well as bridge geographic distance and theological differences that can so easily divide rather than unify Christians.

What developed was a service that began with the classic hymn of thankfulness, ‘We Gather Together.’ It ended with those classic words from ‘Now Thank We All Our God.’

As the organ and brass instruments set the tone, those gathered sang for the depths of their souls. It was a reminder of our foundation in Christ and high esteem people hold for the United States of America.

World Communion Sunday is this Sunday, Oct. 4. The origins for the day trace back to Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh.

It’s a tradition that started in 1933 at Shadyside Church, was adopted as a denominational practice in 1936 and in 1940 was promoted by the organization that would become the National Council of Churches as a tradition to occur around the globe.
