Babe OR Full Age

Hebrews 13:11-14
“Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

In my almost 36 years of ministry I have met a lot of Christians. Some of these Christians are mature Christians and some are, we would say immature Christians. The immature have not grown much. They still have need of “milk” when they should be on “strong meat”. They are in need of one teaching them and they should be teaching others. They are “unskillful in the Word of righteousness” and should be “studying to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the Word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). By using their spiritual senses they should be able “to discern both good and evil”, choosing the good over the evil. How much have you grown since you were born again (John 3:7)? As a Christian would you consider yourself a babe or full age?

Fear No Evil

Psalms 23:4
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Some would say this world we live in today is like a valley of the shadow of death. Death is all around us. So is evil and darkness and they precede death. But, I think this verse means more than just that. For the Christian who is near death there is no reason for him or her to fear the enemy called death. Why? Because “Thou (the LORD) art with me”! He has promised, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5).
That is a promise that we can rest our faith in that can help us to live with no fear of evil, even at a time of death.
This promise is personal. We must understand our personal faith in the LORD does not carry another through their fear. There is no such thing as proxy faith in the LORD. The insurance company I use used to have a once a year meeting in which the members can attend and vote on certain issues. If you could not attend you had the option of sending in a card giving someone else the right to vote by proxy. Faith in the LORD must be personal. Can you say, “The LORD is my shepherd…”, and “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me”?
What a wonderful promise.

Not Ashamed At His Coming

1 John 2:28, 29
“And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.”

We know that Jesus Christ is coming again. When, nonone knows the day, or the hour. In these verses the Christian is admonished to “abide in Him”, that “we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His appearing”. The word “abide” means to remain, to sojourn, not to depart. The way to do this is to spend time daily in His Word, be faithful to church and His work, let not sin have dominion over you, and to do His will for your life. This will help to build “confidence” so that we are not “ashamed before Him at His coming”. The word “ashamed” here has to do with feeling disgraced. How do you think any Christian would feel, standing before Christ when He comes, knowing they just got caught in sin, or has been unfaithful to Him and His cause? Disgraced is a good word to describe the feeling. May God help us who are saved to abide in Him.

Purifying Yourself

1 John 3:3
“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”

The hope that John is writing about in this verse is the hope of being saved, knowing that one day Jesus Christ will return to this earth, and that you will see Him as He is (see 1 John 3:1, 2).
Do you have this hope in you?
If so, then you and I and anyone else who is saved are asked to “purifieth himself, even as he is pure”. Positionally in Christ, the believer is already pure. This is part of the theme of Romans chapters 6 through 8. But, we are admonished to purify ourself in practical ways. That is, we are to work at removing all the impurities in our heart and life. One cannot read, look at, or listen to the sinful filth of this world and think it has no effect upon our walk with Christ or witness to others. Just as you and I would not eat or drink from a dirty vessel, God does not want to use us if we are dirty vessels (2 Timothy 2:19-21). Think about and ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there are any impurities in your heart and life. It should not be difficult for any of us to spot them. Summer is about over and fall is on the way, but maybe the season we need to go through is springtime. Maybe it is time for a spiritual spring cleaning of the heart.

A Spiritual Mess

1 Timothy 1:9-10
“Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;”

As my pastor read this text the other night at church it made me think of how vile and wicked America and the world has become. We are eye witnesses to those who are “murderers of fathers and… murderers of mothers…, whoremongers…, them that defile themselves with mankind…, menstealers…, liars…, perjured persons”. How could people commit such things? They have become lawless in their lifestyles. The law of God was made or given that “all the world may become guilty before God” (Romans 3:19). But we see people that look at the laws of the land and of God as only a mere hindrance to live as they want. It seems as a country we have lost our moral compass and are wondering in the dark. Can the church help? Maybe, but note the last statement in our verse, “and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine”. God places the sin of allowing false doctrine right up there with these other sins. Our world needs help and the church needs “sound doctrine”.
May God help us all!

The LORD Is Our Help And Shield

Matthew 1:9-11
“O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.”

These three verses further prove to us that the LORD’s grace for one’s help and protection is for whosoever will. The Psalmist recognized that God’s help and protection was for whosoever or “Ye that fear the LORD”, and not just “Israel” or “the house of Aaron”. To have a fear of the LORD one must have a reverential trust or faith in the LORD concerning who He is, what He has done, and what He says He will do. To fear the LORD is not to be afraid of the LORD that you cannot approach Him, but it is to have a holy respect for Him and to revere Him. The Psalmist notes in his song that when we trust in the LORD, when we fear the LORD, the LORD becomes our help and shield. Without that trust or fear what is left? We are left in a world of evil with no help or protection. We are left to our own devices. How shall one stand without the LORD?

Could It Be From Your Own Doings?

Proverbs 26:27
“Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.”

Through my years of pastoring and ministry work I have spoken with those who shared with me the problems they were facing. May God help me to never take lightly that someone entrusts their prayer requests unto me. I do not feel it is my place as a preacher or minister to “figure out” the reason their problem exist or has come upon them, unless they ask me for the help or counsel. Sometimes the obvious conclusion is what our verse in Proverbs states, they fell in the very pit they dug or they are getting ran over by the stone they have been rolling. In such cases my counsel to them is learn from it and you make the necessary change of repentance to stop the problem from recurring. And seek God’s forgiveness and grace to help. We all reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). If we sow the seeds of sin, then know for sure that nothing good will ever be harvested from it. But, if we sow righteous seed in time we will reap a harvest of righteousness.

Peace With God & Joy In The Heart

Romans 5:1-2
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Being saved “by grace through faith” gives us justification before God. The word “justified” in Romans 5:1 means to render or to declare righteous. Before God and through my salvation in Jesus Christ, I am declared righteous before God. Being justified gives me peace with God. Though one is a sinner by nature, through Jesus Christ the one saved is declared righteous. Not only this, the one who is saved has access by faith into this grace of where they stand eternally saved. In this I rejoice!! True peace and lasting joy is only found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Being saved not only makes one right before God, it brings peace and lasting joy into one’s heart and life. Sort of makes you want to sing… “I have the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart… Down in my heart to stay!”

Righting Your Wrongs

Proverbs 28:13
“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

Luke 19:8-9
“And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house…”

Our verse in Proverbs shows us that the pathway that leads to mercy is the confession of one’s own wrongs and then forsaking the wrongs. Zacchaeus the Jewish tax collector had stolen from and treated many people wrongly on his way to his elite way of living. But when he met Jesus something in his heart changed. Salvation came into his heart. He pledged half of his estate to give to the poor and promised to pay back those who he had stolen from with four times the amount ! He was not covering his sins and wrongs, he was confessing them and he was attempting to make them right. This is the sort of thing that happens when one gets truly right with God in their heart. How do you think Zacchaeus’s neighbors felt the day he showed up not only returning the extra he had stolen from them when collecting their taxes but giving them four times the amount?
If one truly wants peace in their heart they not only must confess their wrongs (sins), they must make their wrongs to others right. Such will not only find peace, they will find mercy as well.
