Addictions

1 Corinthians 6:12-13
“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.”

There are all kinds of addictions, but the Apostle Paul testified in these verses that “I will not be brought under the power of any”. Most people I know are not addicted to drugs or alcohol, but what about other things? What about po*******hy and overeating (these two are mentioned in our text)? What about smoking, or cell phones and computers? I could go on with my list, but do any of these things or something else have you under its power? This devotion came to me on Sunday morning. Due to the hurricane many woke up with no power and cell towers were out making our connection with others difficult. Let’s be honest, many of us could find ourself under bo***ge to our cell phone? Staying connected with family and friends is very important and that’s not what I am talking about. It’s everything else a cell phone brings into our mind.
Are we “brought under the power of any”?
Here’s a thoughtful truth, just because it is lawful does not make it ok and right for any of us to participate. Do a Bible word study on the word temperance and ask yourself if you possess it.

Eternity

Psalms 90:2
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

1 Timothy 1:17
“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

God is eternal and mankind, who was created in the image of God, will one day spend eternity somewhere. The Bible teaches us that somewhere is either Heaven or Hell. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” The grave awaits all mankind, but after the grave, where then? I am glad I can with confident faith say that Heaven will be my eternal home. Thoughts of eternity do not frighten me, they delight me. I respect death, but I do not fear it.
I believe that is because of the promise I have from Jesus. Jesus promised in John chapter 14 that He has gone to prepare a place for me in Heaven, that where He is I will one day be with Him. Eternity awaits you, do you know where you will spend it?

The Groaning Of Creation

Romans 8:21-23
“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bo***ge of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”

Revelation 22:3
“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:”

I wonder how often we Christians think of the truth that one day God will lift the curse that was placed upon this earth when the original sin was committed. Creation as we know it presently has a curse placed upon it (Genesis 3:16-19). Some years ago while sitting in a bee keepers class and listening to an instructor speak about the terror of the varroa destructor mite, I thought about this curse that has all of creation in bo***ge. He asked a simple question, “Does anyone know why we have a problem with the varroa mite?”
My immediate answer, in thought, was the curse. Why do women have sorrow and difficulty in child bearing? Why do we have to deal with weeds in our garden? Why was the man placed as ruler over the woman in marriage? Why does man have to work and why do we have to experience the pains of death? It is all due to the fact that we are living under the curse. Both creation and the creature (mankind) are groaning in pain and travail. Along with creation we wait for the lifting of the curse, the redemption of the body. The Christian has so much to look forward to in eternity.

Spiritual Warfare

2 Corinthians 10:3-4
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)”

2 Timothy 2:3-4
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

I am afraid that most Christians do not fully understand the nature of spiritual warfare. In honesty I’m not sure I fully understand it. But I do know there is an unseen force of evil that opposes all that is of God. The resistance we face when we set out to do good for God is not coincidental. It was not a stretch of words when the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write about “war” and “warfare” and being a “soldier” and fighting the good fight of faith. The Christian must not ignore or dismiss this truth. Acknowledging the battle exists, helps one to recognize the need to pick up the weapons that are not carnal but mighty! Those mighty weapons are the Word of God, sincere and fervent prayer, the church, and the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. We must seize these weapons to our advantage. We must be careful that we do not allow ourself to get entangled in “the affairs of this life”. As soldiers we must press forward! So much is at stake! There are souls to be saved and saints that need help. Onward for Jesus!

An Open Invitation

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus invites us all to “come unto me”.
He also invites us to “take my yoke upon you, and learn of me…”This is an open invitation from Jesus for anyone to find the spiritual rest, guidance, and victory over sin. I believe some people need help in coming unto Jesus. This is where the church and other ministries can assist the one who needs the help and victory Jesus can give. Churches that have a good, Bible-based discipleship program, or Sunday School, or group Bible study programs can be an assistant in someone getting to Jesus. So can ministries that have programs that help people overcome their sinful addictions, or other spiritual problems. God can use such churches and ministries to help. Jesus said He could give you rest and you could learn from Him. Victory could be closer than you think if you would just receive the help and accept Jesus’s invitation to come unto Him.

What Do You Think Of Yourself?

Job 42:5-6
“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

These are the last words Job speaks of himself, in the book that bears his name. He said, “I abhor myself…” This means that Job despised what he saw in himself. What he saw lead him to repent in dust and ashes”. Literally, sitting in dust and ashes was a common biblical practice in Job’s day. It was a sign of deep regret, remorse, and sorrow. It was also a sign of humility and total surrender to God.
Job got a vision of who God was and that vision of God gave Job a true vision of himself. There was a transition from Job hearing about God to having a vision of God. Job moved from the intellectual about God to a realness of God. This truth caused Job to see himself as he really was. And he did not like what he saw about himself.

Romans 12:3
“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

The Cross Of Jesus

John 19:25
“Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.”

I am interested in the phrase, “the cross of Jesus”. Others had died on a cross before and after Jesus, but no one had died the way Jesus died.
Jesus said in John 10:17-18
“Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it
again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”

We must understand, Roman soldiers did not take Jesus’s life from Him. Jesus gave His life freely and willingly. Those before and after Him who died on a cross had their life taken for crimes they had committed, Jesus gave His life. One of the two on each side of Jesus had this to say in Luke 23:41 “And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.” They were guilty, He was innocent. It is quite amazing how people react to the preaching of the cross of Christ. Some preachers have forgotten the message of the cross. Some people, obviously lost people, hate its message. In Philippians 3:18-19 Paul wrote, “(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)”

How Did They Do It?

2 Corinthians 8:1-4
“Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.”

These Macedonian believers gave a gift to the Apostle Paul’s work in the Lord. That does not sound like a great accomplishment, but when you consider that he mentions they were in a great trial of affliction and in deep poverty it makes you wonder how they gave? Not just how, but some would ask why did they give?
If you are in affliction and poor wouldn’t God understand if you did not give when the offering plate was passed by your pew? God had put it within the heart of those people to give to the Lord’s work through Paul. They were obedient and through their faith they gave. That answers the questions of why and how they gave their gift. I have the belief that the Apostle Paul even hesitated taking their gift. It says it took “much intreaty” for him to receive their gift. These believers were determined to give to God’s work. How determined are you in your giving to the Lord’s work?
