Placer Hills Union School District is in crisis, and our educators are feeling the impact every day.
For the second year in a row, the District is claiming there is no money for employee raises — even as state funding continues to increase. Meanwhile, teachers are facing rising inflation, higher healthcare premiums, and shrinking take‑home pay.
Our students deserve classrooms staffed by educators who feel supported, respected, and valued.
Our community deserves transparency.
And our district needs a plan that doesn’t balance the budget on the backs of its employees.

Members and Supporters, email Superintendent Figuly and the School Board TODAY and urge them to accept this offer and end the impasse! Let them know you want and expect a response today regarding their position on this offer and an explanation - if they aren’t going to support it, demand an answer to what plan they have to end the impasse and support our teachers and students? While prepares to go to Fact-Finding, we continue to work to find a deal to end these negotiations. Today ABEA sent a two-year offer to the District that would move much of the financial burden into next year. This deal would be more affordable for the District this year, when they are claiming they cannot find money to fairly compensate teachers. It would allow the District time to budget and prioritize teachers for next year with a concrete plan.

ABEA continues to question the budget numbers that the District has put forth, and strongly believes that our members deserve far more. This proposed deal will only cover a third of the inflation our members are facing. However, we are eager to find a compromise, close these negotiations, and get back to focusing on our classrooms.

Dear Placer Hills Union School District community, ABEA is disheartened to report that after meeting with an impartial State mediator for two days to assist with the bargaining impasse, a settlement agreement was not reached.

ABEA wants to assure everyone that the teachers were willing to make major concessions to reach a deal. But unfortunately, the district has not shown that same willingness to negotiate so the parties still remain at impasse for now.

ABEA will continue to fight for a fair deal for our members and will explore all possible next steps in the coming weeks as we are now preparing for the fact-finding process in an attempt to avoid a strike. Our members have been working hard all year long despite their paychecks shrinking due to inflation but they can’t continue to do this indefinitely. The district has financial challenges as well but it can’t balance the budget on the backs of its employees - THAT IS NOT A PLAN.

Fact Finding is the use of an impartial expert (or group) selected by the parties, in order to determine what the "facts" are in our dispute. Ultimately, this will lead to a published report, but it is not binding on either party. Ultimately, it is up to all of us to reach a fair settlement deal that we can all live with that best supports our students now and into the future. Thank you for all the support and encouragent and your continued patience as ABEA continues to fight for investing in our students in the most impactful ways.

The ABEA Bargaining Team is meeting for the second time today with the District and a state mediator. They are hopeful to come away from this meeting with a fair deal for members. But they need your help!

Members and supporters, email the Board and the Superintendent TODAY and urge them to finish these negotiations with an offer that doesn’t force teachers to work for less, that doesn’t ask teachers to lose money over increased costs in their healthcare, and doesn’t leave our teachers behind the rest of their colleagues in the area.

ABEA is gravely concerned about the budget the district has presented at second interim. If the projected budget numbers prove accurate, this is a drastic change from just a few months ago, and a far cry from where we were a year ago.

PHUSD held a reserve of 17.8% at the last Actuals back in September. Now the district is proposing layoffs in order to meet minimum reserves only six months later. If these projections are accurate, we all need to learn a great deal more about how and why this happened.

ABEA will be submitting a list of detailed questions to the Superintendent and the Business Manager, as we all try to learn more about what exactly has happened in these projections. We hope the board and the community can hear the answers to these questions from the District Office soon.

Good afternoon PHUSD community,

Thank you for your support of and teachers this week as we paused working beyond contract hours to focus on resolving the ongoing bargaining impasse with the District. We have been moved to hear and see the support from our families and community members.

Your support, and the focused efforts of our teachers, made an impact. We were hopeful this would pressure the District to move more quickly, and we are pleased the solidarity helped result in a special board meeting getting scheduled.

Now that the board has met this week and discussed our negotiations - a week earlier than expected - we are pausing a portion of our actions. Starting Monday, March 10, we are pleased to announce that teachers will return to staffing all clubs, including before and after school Homework Club.

That being said, our work is not done. For the time being, teachers will still not be working beyond their contractual obligations. All work beyond strictly required duties and outside of “contract hours” will continue to be on pause, with the exceptions of the aforementioned clubs.

We remain hopeful that the District can present ABEA with a fair deal in the near future, and we ask for your continued support and patience while the bargaining impasse remains. We encourage you to continue urging Superintendent Figuly and the PHUSD board to make a fair deal to teachers and to hold them accountable for the grave and concerning budget update they presented on Wednesday night at this late point in the school year.

With rising inflation, increased healthcare costs, and expenses through the roof, our teachers shouldn’t be making less this year. Come to the special board meeting TONIGHT at WHS and tell the board and Superintendent that our teachers deserve more not less!
