Long before The Wizard of Oz famously wowed the world by stepping into Technicolor in 1939, color was already saturating the photography market. But did you know that 30 years before that color explosion, photographers were using a completely different, handwritten style of art to bring images to life? 📸🎨

Here at the museum, we love uncovering these hidden details, and this incredible tintype photo from 1880 is the perfect example!

Tintypes became wildly popular starting in the late 1840s as the second major photography technique in history. But by today’s standards, the camera couldn't capture actual color. Instead, artists took matters into their own hands—literally!

Take a closer look at this well-to-do family portrait. If you look closely, you can spot the hand-tinted details added after the photo was taken:
🎀 A subtle pink ribbon
✨ Glints of gold on the earrings
🌸 A soft, rosy flush on the cheeks

This painstaking process of adding pigment by hand added an extra step to production, creating a beautiful hybrid of photography and painting that gave families a unique, treasured keepsake. It’s a technique that early filmmakers would later adapt in the 1920s to add color to silent movies!

Next time you visit us at the Yamhill County History Museum, see how many hand-colored tintypes you can spot in our galleries!

👇 Do you have any old family tintypes passed down through your generations? Tell us about them in the comments!🌲🏛️

Balloon Toss: Balloon Toss: Happy Accident! 🎈

Did you know the water balloon was actually invented by accident? In the 1950s, a man named Edgar Ellington was trying to create a waterproof sock to help protect people’s feet. While testing his idea, he filled a small balloon with water. When the balloon leaked, he got frustrated and tossed it away… SPLAT! It burst! 💦

Instead of seeing it as a mistake, Edgar realized a water-filled balloon was actually pretty fun. Soon, water balloons became a popular toy, and kids started creating games with them, including the classic Balloon Toss!

In baseball's earliest days, catching barehanded was a point of pride. Players who wanted protection were often mocked and called "soft" or "weaklings."

Trivia question:
When did gloves become standard gear in base ball?

American Past Times is going to be an Outstanding event! This is one of the activities we have planned 😎

🥚 Egg and Spoon Race: A ClassicEgg and Spoon Race: A Classic Game of Balance!

The egg and spoon race may look simple, but it has been challenging kids (and adults!) for generations! The game began in Victorian England in the late 1800s, where it was played at village celebrations and community gatherings. As families immigrated to the United States, they brought this fun tradition with them.

By the early 1900s, the egg and spoon race had become a favorite at American picnics, school field days, and community celebrations. It was a simple game that didn’t require much equipment - just an egg, a spoon, and a little patience!

The Legacy of the Land

There is a unique kind of strength found in fathers who work the farm. It’s in the dirt under his fingernails, the weathered lines on his face, and the quiet patience it takes to watch things grow—both the crops in the field and the children by his side.

On a farm, lessons aren't just taught; they are lived. A father passes down the rhythm of the seasons, the value of a hard day's work, and the resilience to keep going when the weather doesn't cooperate. To a little boy or girl, he isn’t just a dad—he’s a teacher, a protector, and a real-life hero in a cowboy hat.

The bond built in a barn, sharing a heavy lift or a quiet moment after a long day's chore, is one that stands the test of time.

Today, we honor the grit, the dedication, and the deep love of all the fathers and father figures who have shaped our families and our agricultural history.

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at the Yamhill County History Museum! 🌾🚜
