Community Foundation for Northern Virginia The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia strives to build a community that works for everyone. Community Foundations.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is uniquely positioned to help give a leg up to the region’s neediest while raising the quality of life for all. Since 1978, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has been the premier charitable partner trusted by thousands of generous Northern Virginians. Our mission is to grow philanthropy to help meet the most critical needs of the communi

ty. Comprised of donor advised funds, community investment funds, scholarship funds, and giving circles, we help engage donors in community, meet community needs with community resources, and strengthen Northern Virginia. Our Community Foundation serves the entire region, including Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is recognized for having organizational and financial practices that are in accordance with the National Standards for U.S. The Council on Foundations and leaders of the community foundation field created the National Standards in 2000 to aid community foundations in establishing legal, ethical and effective operational practices that would show the foundations’ transparency and financial responsibility in light of the increased public scrutiny of foundation practices. In addition, National Standards were developed to distinguish community foundations from other philanthropic vehicles, build the capacity of community foundations to carry out their missions, and assist the field with self-regulation in a manner viewed positively by the Internal Revenue Service.

Big conversations, thoughtful collaboration, and a powerful reminder of what’s possible when philanthropy comes together.

Last week, CFNOVA’s Amanda Bomfim attended the Virginia Funders Network Conference, where nonprofit and philanthropic leaders from across the Commonwealth gathered to discuss the future of the sector and the role funders can play in supporting sustainable change.

Amanda also had the opportunity to moderate a panel exploring how funders can support nonprofits navigating strategic transitions such as mergers, shared services, and collaborations. The conversation brought together leaders and experts for an honest discussion filled with real-world insights, tough questions, and opportunities for collective learning.

One of Amanda’s biggest takeaways from the conference:
“There’s a lot of work ahead for funders. But with shared commitment—and a willingness to lead with hope and courage—we have a real opportunity to help make our sector more sustainable, protective, and transformative.”

We’re grateful for spaces like this that foster connection, collaboration, and bold thinking for the future of philanthropy in Virginia.

What happens when language becomes a barrier to safety, opportunity, and belonging?

In the newest episode of the We’re Good Podcast, host Lee Ann Necessary Brownlee sits down with Roopal Mehta Saran of the English Empowerment Center and volunteer teacher Kathleen McCleary to discuss the reality of linguistic isolation facing thousands of immigrants across Northern Virginia.

Through deeply personal stories, this episode explores how learning English can open doors to confidence, connection, and a brighter future — from navigating emergency medical situations to rebuilding careers and finding community.

With more than 2,000 students served annually and 600+ volunteers supporting the mission, the English Empowerment Center is helping transform lives every day.
