Wegene Ethiopian Foundation - WEF

Wegene Ethiopian Foundation - WEF The Wegene Ethiopian Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to ending the poverty cycle in Ethiopia We are caretakers.

This mission is accomplished by providing support to families with children in their own home setting using local people as caretakers and monitors for the families being supported by WEF to ensure that the program functions as intended and that it produces the desired results. We are helping less fortunate children and their families in Ethiopia by providing the opportunity and resources to impro

ve their lives. We enable hardworking destitute families to meet their daily needs, send their children to school and create opportunities for them to become self sufficient. We plan to achieve these goals by:
• Matching up families with caretakers in their communities
• Preparing a home setting for homeless
families
• Enrolling children in public or private
schools
• Engaging family heads in vocational or
skill training
• Providing selected families with grants to
start-up small businesses, or helping them secure full-time jobs

We give the opportunity for less fortunate families and their children to improve their future via education, training, and the provision of appropriate resources. We help sustain children as well as their communities towards self-sufficiency to holistic and productive lives. We encourage partners across the world, and specifically here in the United States, to sponsor families and children at a cost of one cup of coffee per day. Wegene holds partners' appreciation day annually. Our partners will get photographs, reports and personal letters from the sponsored families. We will share the families' yearly pictures, videos, progress reports, receipts, children's report cards, and requests. As our partners witness these families become self-sufficient and more independent, we introduce our potential list of families who are on the waiting list to be sponsored.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn with confidence and dignity.

This weekend, Wegene joined a program organized by the Arada Sub-City Administration Women’s, Children and Social Affairs Office to distribute washable sanitary pads to young girls and women.

What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that the pads were produced by Wegene mothers participating in our economic empowerment program. Through skills training and hands-on experience, these mothers are gaining opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods while supporting the health and education of young people in their communities.

Today, the pads are being donated to those who need them most. Tomorrow, this initiative has the potential to create lasting income opportunities for the women who make them.

Together, we can break barriers to education, promote menstrual dignity, and create pathways to economic independence.

A Mother’s Legacy, A Family’s Strength

This week, the Wegene family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Tsion, a devoted mother, loving wife, and one of the strongest women we have had the privilege to know.

Tsion leaves behind her precious children and a husband whose life was deeply intertwined with hers.

One of Tsion’s proudest moments was the day her family moved from a fragile plastic shelter into a safe home. That day was about more than walls and a roof, it was about dignity, hope, and the promise of a better future. Through every challenge and every victory, Wegene stood beside her, and she embraced that support with strength, grace, and determination.

Today, we grieve with her family. But we are also reminded that Wegene is more than a program, it is a family. When one of us hurts, we all hurt. When one of us falls, we gather around those left behind.

While Tsion is no longer with us, her children and family will continue to have a community that loves them, stands with them, and walks beside them. That is the promise we make, and the strength Wegene provides.

Rest in peace, beautiful Tsion. Your light will continue to shine through the lives you touched and the family you loved so dearly.

As we step into April, we carry forward deep gratitude for a truly inspiring moment that took place on Friday, March 27, 2026, during the close of Women’s Month.

Wegene is profoundly humbled to receive the Humanitarian Award from Maryland African Chamber of Commerce at their 5th Annual Maryland African Diaspora International Women’s Day Celebration.

This recognition is not simply an honor, it is a reflection of collective love in action. It belongs to every family whose resilience fuels our purpose and every volunteer whose hands and hearts show up when it matters most. It is the story of a community that turns compassion into impact and service into lasting legacy.

To all the extraordinary women celebrated this season and beyond March, your strength does not end with a month, it continues as a movement that uplifts generations and transforms communities every single day.

With heartfelt appreciation, we thank MACC for uplifting our mission and reminding us that when we Give to Gain, we build stronger communities, together.

With deepest gratitude,
Wegene board

25 Years of Impact. One Unforgettable Night.

What an extraordinary and joy-filled night celebrating Wegene’s 25th Anniversary in Addis. The room was filled with hope, love, and purpose, a true reflection of the incredible community that makes Wegene so special. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for our families, partners, volunteers, and especially our inspiring Wegene Youth Alumni, who are living proof that investing in our children creates leaders ready to carry this mission boldly into the next generation.

We were deeply honored by the presence of our Guest of Honor, H.E. Huria Ali, State Minister for Social Affairs at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs of Ethiopia. Her leadership and support uplifted the evening and strengthened our shared commitment to empowering vulnerable families and building brighter futures.

Huge cheers and heartfelt thanks to Flawless Events for their exceptional setup, coordination, and organization of the evening, and to our generous sponsors, Chakka Origins, Hilton Addis Ababa, Leafy Bike, and Yeab Tibeb, whose partnership made this milestone celebration truly shine.

Special applause to our phenomenal MC, Taye Worku, to live art artist Eyasu Sisay for his powerful live art presentation, and to the incredible artist Tamerat Siltan for his stunning, meaningful, and generously donated artworks that added beauty, emotion, and impact to the night.

We also extend our sincere thanks to EBS and Yoseph Badi for attending and beautifully documenting our special event, helping us share this milestone with an even wider community.

A heartfelt thank you to all our Wegene volunteers who helped sell tickets and made this a sold-out event. Your dedication and enthusiasm truly set the tone for a remarkable evening.

Special thanks to our dedicated volunteer, Rakeb Abate, who mobilized volunteers from multiple schools and led our youth volunteers throughout the event. We are also deeply grateful to our amazing partner, Selam Learning, for providing outstanding youth volunteers whose energy and commitment made a real difference.

We are especially grateful to our Wegene families for their powerful and hope-filled testimonies and to everyone who gave their time and heart to make the evening unforgettable.

The energy was electric. The mission is strong. The next generation is ready. Wegene’s investment in diaspora children is creating a legacy of leaders, and the future has never looked brighter.
