The Josh Anderson Foundation

The Josh Anderson Foundation Working toward the day when no more teens die by su***de. Josh was 17-years-old when he took his own life on March 18, 2009. Thank you for your support!

The Josh Anderson Foundation was formed for two purposes – to keep Josh’s memory alive and to collect funds for the education and prevention of teenage su***de. We have expanded the scope of the fund to address the broader issue of Youth Mental Wellness. Teenagers need to understand that their mental and emotional well being is just as important as academic, athletic, or extra-curricular success.

The Foundation's mission is to provide adolescents with the mental health education, resources and support so that they will never turn to su***de.

May is Mental Health Month and we at OMM are thriving, we hope you are too. As a result, our May campaign is called Thriving Together. With this in mind, we are pleased to announce every weekend in May, OMM will have a public wellness session that is free to attend (not including cost of materials).

Join us on May 2nd, for a fun vision boarding activity, something that may help you figure out what you’re going to do when the pandemic life is no more. You’ve surived the pandemic, now thrive after it.

On May 8th, join us for a delectable floral arrangement class led by Berlin-based entrepreneur and artist, Maya Sriqui.

On May 16, we will be hosting a heart-opening yoga class hosted by DC-based Caren Plummer that leaves your mind and body feeling more flexible, better able to take on the challenges in your life. It will help you strive to thrive.

We are also pleased to announce our upcoming Thriving Brunch as Our Minds Matter’s spring fundraiser. The Thriving Brunch serves as the end of our Thrving Together campaign and will be a fantastic virtual celebration where we celebrate our student’s wins, offer awards and have some fun surprises as well. The Brunch will be Sunday, May 23rd at 11AM EST. Join us at 10AM EST for a special cooking session with DC Master Chef Chris Morgan who has graciously volunteered his time.

At the cooking class, we’ll be whipping up a delicious and sublime Iranian Kuku (the yummy, healthy meal at the top of the page). Grab a plate, a mimosa and a chair. Be sure to sign up for the Thriving Weekends and Thriving Brunch. You won’t want to miss them!

Hi everyone, we hope you’ve had a happy Black History month so far. We want to begin today by saying something obvious, Black women are great and for the next four weeks, we will cover only a handful of these women. Each of these women are great because they let their light shine in a society that doesn’t want them to shine. They were able to see what made them great, encapsulate it and live it each day in order to fight for a cause that they believe in. We at Our Minds Matter are inspired by this and want to spend each Friday giving love to a Black woman from history who ignites the greatness engine within all of us. Today’s featured landmark in history will be the brilliant Shirley Chisholm.
Shirley Chisholm was born on November 10, 1924, in the loving home of a young, Black, immigrant family. There was where she learned how to find the value in herself through her grandmother and parents, who were always proud to be Black and instilled in her a love of service and community. Chisholm graduated from the prestigious Brooklyn College in 1946 where she was known for her excellent debate skills and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She went on to work in childcare and education, becoming head of the Friends Day Nursery in New York City and becoming well versed in educational and child welfare policy and issues.
Chisholm then took a chance on herself, running and winning an election to become the first woman member of the New York State Assembly in 1964 despite facing open racism and misogyny from both Democrats and Republicans. Everywhere she went, Chisholm worked to open doors for other Black people to follow behind her. Despite being in the Assembly for only a year, she was grudgingly known for her high level of competence as a freshman. She then ran for Congress in 1968 and won in a landslide despite being counted as the underdog. When elected, she hired only women in her office and already made waves in Congress, being crucial to creation and passing of SNAP. She is also a founding member of both the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Organization of Women.
She then ran for the presidency in 1972, where she made a splash in the primary despite having no support from the Democratic Party. Despite threats against her life, she continued to campaign and said she ran for the office “in spite of hopeless odds ... to demonstrate the sheer will and refusal to accept the status quo”.
Shirley Chisholm retired from Congress in 1983 and returned to teaching. She was offered an ambassador position to Jamaica by President Bill Clinton in 1993 but declined due to poor health. She died in 2005 and on her tombstone reads “Unbought and Unbossed”.
A special thanks for our partners at the AAKOMA Project and our panelists. Be sure to register for our upcoming Black Mental Health panel on February 23 at 7PM here:

We won the 8PM Power Hour! Thank you so much everyone, we raised more than 150% of our goal and it is all thanks to you. We couldn’t be more ecstatic, you all are great both individually and collectively. This money will go directly to providing mental health support for teens into 2021. The impact you all have made in the countless lives of many is substantial. Now, more teens will have access to mental health support and we can work to turn the tide on teen su***de. Honestly, we were so overwhelmed by this wave of support. Thank you so much for supporting Our Minds Matter and for working to build a world where teen su***de does not exist. To our student leaders, you are the future and the future looks bright.
