Happy Birthday to the one and only Duke!

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington born on April 29, 1899 in Washington D.C.
The famous pianist, composer lead the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1924 until his death in 1974. Ellington wrote or collaborated on more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded jazz collection.

Ellington embraced the phrase "beyond category" when discussing his music. He considered his music to be a liberating principle, and referring to his music as part of the more general category of American Music rather than most often associated genre "Jazz". Indeed his music stands apart as elegant and sophisticated even to this day.

Happy Birthday to "The First Lady of Song" !

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, VA on April 25, 1917.
In her lifetime, Ella won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums!
She recorded with all the jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman.

Off stage, and away from people she knew well, Ella was shy and reserved. She even doubted the extent of her abilities. On stage, however, Ella had no fear and felt right at home in the spotlight. "Once up there, I felt the acceptance and love from my audience," Ella said. "I knew I wanted to sing before people the rest of my life."

Ella recorded many covers of other musicians songs including those by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and the Gershwins. Ira Gerswhin once remarked; "I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them".
