Kentucky farmer, poet, novelist, essayist, and environmental activist Wendell Berry passed away yesterday at 92. Mr. Berry famously wrote, "Do unto those downstream as you would have those upstream do unto you" (in his essay, "Watershed and Commonwealth") -- a quote that's been hanging in our office since 2017.

While you're listening to Dolly, read a little Wendell, too. We recommend starting with his poem "The Peace of Wild Things."

In late September to mid-October we'll be distributing this year's "tabloid" booklets to all schools in Jackson County, as we've done every year for ages. Grades K-5 participate in the art contest (for which we also supply the cardstock paper), and grades 6-12 do the writing contest. This year's theme is soil, as shown on the 2026 tabloid's front page (below).

In December, our elected Board of Supervisors will judge each school's top 3 entries, and send the best art entry and best essay entry on to Frankfort to be judged against the rest of the state's entries. Winners can get cash prizes!

If you'd like to ensure that the kids in your life get to participate, check with their schools!

If you need help with septic repair/installation, Eastern Kentucky PRIDE is taking applications for their program. Its requirements are pretty much identical to ours. They're based in Somerset, but they do serve several counties, including Jackson.

As y'all know, we offer a grant-funded program like this every spring. Our funding is very limited, and is usually gone in just a couple of months, meaning we can't help as many people as we'd like. We hope PRIDE will fill in some of the gaps in Jackson County.

🛑If you qualify, you can apply on their website or reach out to them directly for a paper application. Note that we are not the ones offering this program. It's a different organization.🛑

‼️UPDATE 7/27‼️ Stinky is off wandering again, but people in her area are looking out for her and there’s someone who’ll take her once she’s found again. A small network of lovely folks are collaborating to help her get to this safe place. Thank you all so much for caring about Stinky and sharing her story. ❤️🙏🏼

——————————————————-

Jackson County, we’ve heard a sad story this evening. Apparently a man was found deceased today in a campground somewhere here in the county and his dog — this lovely Great Pyrenees female, Stinky — wandered away. She ended up with a family in the Indian Creek area, who cannot keep her.

Stinky’s owner’s phone number is on her collar. A friend of his returned the family’s call to let them know the owner had passed, and that there’s no one who can care for Stinky. She needs a home, ASAP.

Stinky is very friendly and sweet. She seems to have an old injury or birth defect affecting her face, because her eyes are a little wonky and her lower jaw is a little crooked. She has trouble chewing but does great with small kibble or wet food. She sees fine and seems very much like a typical GP in every respect.

Please email [email protected] you’d like to make Stinky a part of your home or farm. You’d have to pick her up from the family who currently has her. We have their info. We are monitoring our email this evening and will continue to do so until Stinky finds a home.
