June 27th 2026, Jackson County, along with many other communities across the Commonwealth, experienced significant flash flooding that resulted in numerous swift water rescue calls.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the many agencies that responded to assist Jackson County during this challenging day. Sand Gap Fire Department had the privilege of working alongside Broadhead Fire Department, Berea Fire Department, Kentucky State Police, McKee Police Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Emergency Management, Corbin Fire Department, Laurel County Rescue Squad, McKee, Fire Department Pond Creek Fire Department, Gray Hawk Fire Department, Jackson County EMS and Kentucky Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1.
With multiple emergency calls coming in simultaneously throughout the county, our neighboring departments responded without hesitation when we needed them most. Your willingness to answer the call made a tremendous difference.
At this time, Sand Gap Fire Department has completed 9 swift water rescues. While we are not aware of the total number of rescues completed countywide, we know it was a true team effort by all involved.
Thank you to every firefighter, law enforcement officer, EMS provider, emergency manager, dispatcher, and volunteer who worked tirelessly to protect the citizens of Jackson County.
