AQHA’s origin story is swathed in mystery. 🐴
Who was this Steel Dust horse, and why were ranchers across the western United States so enthralled with these beefy, cowy “Steeldust” horses? The appeal of the horses was even more remarkable, since ranchers across different states had no way of knowing that their counterparts in other regions were using similar bloodlines and breeding for the same traits.
Bob Denhardt was the intrepid detective, a university researcher who started putting the puzzle pieces together in the mid- to late-1930s. He spent his weekends, summers and holidays driving all over Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and other states talking to ranchers and other horsemen.
His work solidified the idea that a wonderfully unique breed of horse was taking shape, and it deserved a breed registry to track pedigrees and ensure its longevity.
The January-February issue of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘘𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘏𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 details how Bob’s work began, in Part 1 of Denhardt’s Dream. Part 2, which will appear in the March-April issue, takes us farther down the road of AQHA’s origin.
The ghosts of those founding horses still gallop through today’s American Quarter Horses. Does your horse trace to some of the greats like Peter McCue, Traveler and King?
