The cardinal crosses the warm field
and the dry grass doesn't even stir.
It moves through the amber air
with the particular conviction
of something that knows exactly
where it is going
in a field where everything else
has gone the color of waiting.
When I see a bird pause nearby —
not any bird,
but the red one,
the one that arrives without being called —
I wonder.
I don't finish the sentence.
The wondering is the whole of it —
that soft suspension between
what I know about birds
and what love makes me consider
every time the red arrives
against the amber field,
against the pale sky,
against the ordinary morning
that was going to be just an ordinary morning
until something the color of staying
crossed through it and paused.
