The McGraw Environmental Club is a small organization consisting of several students dedicated to promoting earth-friendly lifestyles. We have been involved in many activities in our community that benefit the health and well being of those living here and around the area, such as river cleanups, highway cleanups, and a school-wide project promoting the importance of composting.
10 students, and M
rs. Lener, have recently been participating in the Lexus Eco Challenge. We won the first challenge and a prize of $10,000! we set up ways that people could reuse and recycle with no hassle to them. We created collection boxes for cell phones, DVDs, Mp3s, iPods, GPS devices, and any other small electronics. We put these boxes in over 50 different locations, including 16 in the residence halls at SUNY Cortland. After a few weeks we collected everything that was in the boxes and sent them to either be recycled or reused at the Funding Factory, a company in Pennsylvania who will send you money for the electronics. We also had a Really, Really Free Market! This involved taking used items and having a big free garage sale so people could take those items home and reuse them. This was a huge success! What are we currently working on? We are currently doing a letter writing campaign to the president, any politicians, and celebrities. We're trying to get the word out about Global Warming and Carbon Sequestration. We're also using these letters to try and get Klaus Lackner's work with Carbon Sequestration recognized. Another thing we've done is we participated in the Homer Winterfest. Which is essentially a craft fair, but that didn't stop us from having a booth where people could learn about Carbon Sequestration and Global Warming, write letters, and make crafts out of egg cartons and other reusable items. We are looking forward to having another Free Market in April with the Green Reps.
