Active McFarland Active McFarland works to promote environmental stewardship and the common good in McFarland and Dane County, WI.

We are guided by these values:

• We believe that our democracy is threatened by money and the corruption it breeds.
• We believe that our Constitution is a living document, created to preserve our rights and freedoms through time and changing circumstances
• We believe that our country should lead by democratic example, not by force.
• We believe that our political parties are not speaking for

“we, the people”.
• We believe that grassroots democracy is essential, possible, and within our power to activate.
• We believe cooperation and civil discourse outperform confrontation and name-calling.
• We believe in strong public schools and support their funding.
• We believe all people should be able to afford good health care.
• We believe in equality before the law.
• We believe that government should not erect barriers to voting.
• We believe that clean air and water are basic human rights.
• We believe that workers are the profit-creators of our economy.
• We will work to make our voices heard.

From Heather Cox Richardson:

"Tonight, speaking to Christians at the Turning Point Action Believers’ Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump made his plans to become a strongman clear: 'Get out and vote. Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what: it’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians…. Get out, you’ve got to get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again, we’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote.'"

Please share this widely.

I stumbled on this today, reaffirming my belief that the universe knows what I’m thinking.

As I listened to the president describe his vice president, as I watched Joe Biden struggle to absorb what was happening on that stage, I became even more certain that this nation is immeasurably better off for having chosen Joe Biden in 2020.

I studied his face and his mannerisms. The past eight years have made real changes. No one looking at him then, and now can deny that. He is old and more frail than we wish him to be. (Personal confession: so am I.)

But, it is what we cannot see, what’s inside him, that we relied on throughout his long career.

We trusted his heart, his character, and his devotion to the American people. And judging by what he has accomplished in his first term, those invisible markers have not changed. They continue to guide his decisions.

One may disagree with one policy or another. Decisions informed by a lifetime of experience, knowledge, and a cadre of equally-dedicated professionals are worthy of honest debate.

When I weigh the visible against the internal, there is no contest. When I compare him to his opponent, I see Mt. Rainier, worn but solid, towering over a crumbling ant hill.

I reject the media frenzy. It is creating what it claims not to want - voter confusion and/or indifference, both of which endanger democracy.

They need to open the ant hill, and expose the trash inside. That’s where real danger lurks.

U.S. President Barack Obama awarded Vice-President Joe Biden the highest civilian honour Thursday, commemorating an "extraordinary man with an extraordinary ...

If you've read my previous post about "doing something", here's a letter to the editor written in response to one of Heather Cox Richardson's posts. The author urged readers to share it widely, so here it is. Modify it as you like, but send it to your local paper - NOW!

To the Editor:
"Sound the Alarm" Project 2025 is a grave threat to American democracy, masquerading as a conservative policy initiative but operating as a coup attempt to install an authoritarian regime.

The plan's core goal is to consolidate executive power, effectively sidelining democratic checks and balances. By reclassifying federal civil service positions into political appointments, it seeks to dismantle the separation of powers, a fundamental safeguard against tyranny.

Further, Project 2025's proposed overhaul of federal agencies, including the dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security and reducing the role of the Department of Education, aims to destabilize government functions critical to a democratic society.

The initiative’s push to slash environmental regulations in favor of fossil fuel interests is a clear indicator of prioritizing corporate power over public welfare and environmental health.

This project is not just a policy shift; it is an orchestrated effort to erode civil liberties and establish a dictatorial regime.

Those who cherish American democracy must recognize and resist Project 2025, as it poses a direct and unprecedented threat to the nation's democratic principles and institutions.

This morning, a dear friend posted this: “We are the change we need, if we could figure out what to do first.” I was moved to respond as follows:

There is no “first “. If we wait until we know what that might be, we will have waited too long.

The essence of true democracy is citizen action. That’s why democracy is simultaneously hard, messy, and right.

Do anything, but do something. Blue Wave Postcard Movement; Vote Forward letters; phone/text potential voters; donate to Law Forward, Common Cause WI, WI Democracy Campaign (they’ve got postcards NOW regarding the constitutional amendments on the Aug. 13 ballot); LWV.

Find one issue in Project 2025 that moves you, and write a letter to the editor about it. Find a Dem running in a newly created assembly district, and contribute a small amount monthly through Act Blue.

We must save our democracy. No one else can or will. We have models throughout our history: abolitionists, suffragists, bus boycotters, LGBTQ advocates, Black Lives Matter, the Sandy Hook Promise, March for our Lives, and WI’s own Solidarity Singers.

Inspiration is everywhere. Find yours, and do something. It doesn’t matter what.

Doing counts. Doing is everything.

Ursula, the angry (very angry) uterus is going on the market. In this anti-woman climate, she has a message for those who have stolen her autonomy from her. I am moved to spread that message far and wide, throughout Wisconsin and beyond.

The Raging Grannies spread her message every other Saturday at the Capitol Square Farmers Market. She now has a place of honor in the home of Kristin Lyerly, MD MPH who is running for Congress in the 8th district to replace the retiring Mike Gallagher. She is also comforting the troubled friend of a friend in MO.

Ursula has her own email address now: [email protected] Should you want one, know someone else who wants one, or want to give her as a gift, that is the only way to reach me. I no longer trust Messenger because of hacking, etc.

Ursula's base price is $14.00 plus postage. Postage has been $5.85 to MO and WI. If that continues to be the case, her total cost will remain $19.85.

Please share this offer with your contacts. Help me get Ursula to those who share her disgust with the powerful. She's had enough and wants the world to know it. Help me spread her message.

Thank you.
