rage as soon as possible. Need: Even before the pandemic, residents of rural Dane County knew that our lack of high-speed internet was a significant problem that went far beyond difficulty downloading movies. Today, families trying to educate their children virtually face significant issues of access and accessibility. Farmers lack fast internet connections with which to make important economic decisions. The contributions of artists, authors, educators and small businesses are held back by slow satellite connections, which produces stagnating growth in towns and villages as families and businesses migrate to cities. For teachers, the slow connection how it also inhibits teachers (at all levels) forced to work from home from communicating with their students. This of course is pressing during the pandemic but also for communicating outside of the classroom. For seniors/older adults who may have difficulty securing transportation to medical appointments, the lack of high-speed internet makes it much more difficulty to utilize tele-medicine. High speed broadband is not a luxury. It is an essential utility like clean water, electricity, or highways. Solutions: Small, scattered populations in Dane County have long organized to meet their own needs, but broadband Internet service demands government-led action. Resources:
