Studies find that “parents are four times more likely to read aloud to their children when given free books and encouragement.”

That’s what we do at Ferst Readers of Henry County! We provide free, quality books to almost 1,800 preschool children every month--books which are addressed to the child, and are mailed with a customized parent engagement newsletter.

The development of critical pre literacy skills should happen well before children arrive for formal schooling in kindergarten. Reading aloud together at home with babies, toddlers, and preschool children is key to fostering the development of these skills, AND the time together is a wonderful bonding time.

May Book Spotlight: You Are Not a Cat! (Sharon G. Flake, author; Anna Raff, illustrator)
This clever and hilarious story stars Cat, who starts out perfectly content and relaxed, and Duck, who infuriates him by meowing like a cat instead of quacking like Cat thinks he should. It is a fun read-aloud, and Duck’s silliness, as he impersonates a variety of animals, will appeal to children who enjoy pretend play.

Some of our lucky little Ferst Readers will be receiving this delightful book soon!

“As lumber is the primary support for building a house, words are the primary structure for learning. There are really two efficient ways to get words into a person’s brain: either by seeing them or by hearing them. Since it will be years before an infant uses their eyes for actual reading, the best source for vocabulary and brain building becomes the ear. What we send into that ear becomes the foundation for the child’s ‘brain house.’ ”
We read to children for all the same reasons. We talk with children to reassure, to entertain, to bond, to inform or explain, to arouse curiosity, and to inspire.
“But in reading aloud we also build vocabulary, associate reading with pleasure, create background knowledge, provide a reading role model, and plant the desire to read.” (Jim Trelease, The Read-Aloud Handbook)
