Somerset Police Department
The Somerset Police Department would like to congratulate their 4 newest additions; Officers Emily Amaya, Coltin Smith, Dylan Stevens, and Cabryn Ping. All of them were sworn in today by the Honorable District Court Judge Katy Sloan.
These officers had a long road to get where they are today. All four officers came through the SPD Intern Program, beginning their time with the department in May 2025. During that time, they assisted with many special events and worked on several projects for the department, including the conversion and renovation of a storage building into a multi-purpose training facility.
The officers graduated yesterday from the Department of Criminal Justice Basic Training Class 569. The course was 20 weeks of various training to include but not limited to legal (pertaining to constitutional rights, understanding KY Revised Statutes, etc.), defensive tactics, physical fitness, fi****ms, operating police emergency vehicle, etc. Some notable mentions were Ofc. Amaya being one of the squad leaders and Ofc. Ping being the Special Projects/Photographer for class leader of 569. All these officers received the fit for duty award, by achieving the 80 percentile or over during the exit physical fitness test. Ofc. Amaya achieved around the 91st percentile in her final fitness testing. While DOCJT hasn’t confirmed yet, she could be the first female in DOCJT history to achieve such a high percentile on the physical fitness test.
“I'm proud of all four of our newest officers and their individual accomplishments while at DOCJT. With all four of these officers beginning their service to our community through our summer internship program last year, I look forward to seeing their progression now as they begin the next chapter of their career as police officers.” – Chief Josh Wesley
The newest officers will now receive further training through the Somerset Police Department’s Field Training Program. This program is a vigorous 14 weeks where each rookie officer will be placed with several Field Training Officers within the department. The FTOs will mentor and train the rookie officers in a more hands on approach in all aspects of law enforcement procedures. Once each officer has completed the FTO program, they will move on to solo patrol officers for the City of Somerset.
