🔒 Many probate courts require the signed original will, not a copy, which is why the foundation of this system is physical: a fireproof document safe at home or your attorney's vault.

A bank safe deposit box is the wrong home for the will in some states, where the box gets sealed at death until a court order opens it, leaving the executor needing the will to get the will.

One binder with labeled tabs holds everything: will, trust, powers of attorney, deeds, vehicle titles, insurance policies, and beneficiary confirmations.

The front page of the binder is a single "who to call" sheet listing what exists, where it is, and the phone numbers for your attorney, CPA, and financial advisor.

An adult child or your attorney keeps a complete second copy, paper or scanned, so no single fire, flood, or theft can take both sets.

Tax returns themselves are keep-forever documents, while the supporting records behind them need 7 years, since the IRS audit window runs 3 years, or 6 when income is understated by 25% or more.

Your executor and your spouse should both know the safe combination and where the binder lives, because a complete plan nobody can find performs exactly like no plan.

A fireproof document safe runs $40 to $80 at any hardware store, the binder costs a few dollars, and the whole setup is one afternoon.

💰 One month ago I posted a crowdsourced list of 30 subscriptions that drop their price when you start the cancellation process.

Readers added 17 more in the comments.

Here's the updated master list. 47 services where readers confirmed a retention offer appears once you hit "cancel."

The MVP of the comments was SiriusXM. More than a dozen readers confirmed discounts ranging from the $28.95 renewal rate all the way down to $1 a month, with the pattern of refusing the first two offers consistently unlocking better ones.

The mechanism is simple. Canceling flags you as a churn risk, and retention departments have a budget to keep you.

Results are account-level, not company-wide. Some readers reported zero discount on Spotify, AT&T, Instacart+, and ChatGPT. Spectrum was mixed.

Script I use: "I can't afford this anymore." Then wait. Don't take the first offer.
Save this one.
