Lie gems of untold splendor, a cosmic dance.

From Your HOTAVS Leadership.....
UPDATE: HOTAVS is now an IRS 501 (c)(3) Organization!

The mission of HOTAVS has, from our beginning in 2022, been all about public outreach & education....without boundaries. Our plans are to continue with our outreach & education work through these free presentations as long as it stays sustainable. Our dues ($20/year) are currently supporting our initial startup expenses. What will determine our biggest success is our volunteer presenters who donate their time & knowledge to getting the info out to our growing public. Only through this outreach & education can we rebuild & grow our community who will hopefully help us grow into a new movement of AV & Gesneriad-loving people! Help us spread the word & we would love to have you join our growing affiliate!

It is with deep sadness that the African Violet Club of Greater Atlanta shares the passing of our beloved member and friend, Johnnie Berry. She passed away on June 20, 2025 after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

To say the Johnnie was a plant lover would be an understatement. She was a Master Gardener, member of eight plant clubs, plus the Garden Clubs of Georgia. At one time she held the title of Treasurer for four different clubs and also held several other positions within these organizations.

Ultimately, African violets and other gesneriads became Johnnie’s passion and in 1981 discovered and joined The African Violet Club of Greater Atlanta (AVCGA). She rarely missed a meeting over these last 40-plus years and twice served as club president. She shared her knowledge with everyone and grew hundreds of plants that she shared in “round robins” with club members and anyone who needed a start. She was also an African violet and gesneriads judge during all this time.

Johnnie’s other memberships included our regional society, The Dixie African Violet Society, attending many of its conventions and held the titles of Treasurer and Membership Coordinator for many years; our national society, The African Violet Society of America (AVSA), attending many national conventions and judging at many of them. She served on several AVSA committees and was a Director in 2016-17. Just last year she was awarded the AVSA’s prestigious Mabel and Glenn Hudson Award for Outstanding Affiliate Leadership; and she was also a member of the Gesneriad Society, where she also served as a Director for two years.

Johnnie was a vital and active participant in all the clubs and societies of which she was a member. We know that her loss will leave a void that will be felt by the AVCGA each time we enter our meeting space.

Rest in Peace, sweet Johnnie.

In Denton, a quiet and studious group of plant lovers have spent the last 50 years growing and promoting the African violet. This charming plant, named for the crisp, clean

The HOTAVS Executive Team has decided to cancel the Heart of Texas AV Society's 3rd Monday meeting regularly scheduled for June 17, 2024.

This is out of respect for the recent deaths of our friends Jim Williams, HOTAVS VP (husband of Glenda Williams, HOTAVS President) & Charles Ramser (husband of the AVSA Secretary Sue Ramser). The loss of our two special AV friends has created a gaping hole in our hearts & our AV community, so some time is needed for our families to grieve & heal.

We are sad to cancel as this would be the 1st meeting cancellation since we began our programs/meetings back in August 2022.

The next HOTAVS 3rd Monday meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday, July 15, 2024. Please watch our FB page for our event posting which should be available later in June.

Really great article on how plants process light.

Why are the leaves green? It sounds like a simple question, but it is still very complicated to explain, involving a lot of molecular botany knowledge. This article will address this question, why leaves are green and how green leaves absorb light.
