McCune Lions Club Will be selling fresh picked tomatoes at Circle's Pecans & Country Store Saturday morning 6/20 starting at 8am. Come out and see us and get some fresh tomatoes!

McCune Lions Club has installed a blessing box. It is located at the Lions Pavilion just north of McCune on 126hwy. You are free to take what you need or to drop off what you don't need. We will be adding more items in the coming days.

McCune Lions members have been busy making all our homemade candy this week! Today all our members will be making our annual candy delivery to around 125 houses in our community. This year the McCune Lions club has also adopted 4 kids for Christmas. We have all of that shopping done and presents wrapped as well! Now on to the Christmas food baskets. Thanks everyone for the support that makes all these projects possible.

McCune Lions Club will be giving out Christmas food baskets to families in the McCune KS area that are less fortunate and needing help with Christmas dinner. Again this year no Turtle races. People always as why? the reason why is below. Please respect our little shelled friends!

The saying "a lost box turtle will wander forever" refers to the box turtle's strong homing instinct and small natural range. If a turtle is moved far from its home territory, it will spend the rest of its life trying to return, often crossing dangerous roads and other hazards in its attempt.
The dangers of relocation
Small home range: A box turtle typically spends its entire life within a very small area, often less than 2 acres.
Powerful homing instinct: They possess an innate sense of navigation that helps them return to their home base.
High risk of death: Relocated turtles, confused by their new surroundings, spend their energy trying to get back. This increases their risk of being hit by cars, attacked by predators, or dying from stress.
Disease transmission: Relocating a turtle can also introduce pathogens into new turtle populations, spreading diseases that local wildlife may not be able to tolerate.
Ornate box turtle populations in Kansas are declining significantly due to factors like habitat loss, the illegal pet trade (poaching), and the impact of turtle racing, which removes them from their native microhabitats. A collaborative survey by Kansas zoos in 2023 confirmed these dramatic declines. These threats, combined with the turtles' slow reproductive rate and vulnerability to environmental changes, warrant increased protection and regulatory action from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks
