Our younger learners spent this semester exploring the three primary colors through wet-on-wet painting and celebrating the season through a group walk, singing, story and games. We were also blessed to have a baker and Indy-based member of the Blue Sky community join us each month to bake bread and share the joy of grinding grain and forming rolls. https://bakesy.shop/b/all-you-knead-is-bread

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) and Hayao Miyazaki (1941-Current Day) completed our biography studies for this semester for our age 8+ children
I recommend Beatrix Potter as a unit study for her unschooling experiences in London and her patience and fortitude. Her use of her wealth to conserve large areas of rural England is an inspiration. Though we know her for the characters that she developed from the letters she wrote to her grown nanny's children, her work with capturing fungi equally impressive. https://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Impossible-Story-Beatrix-Potter/dp/0689206186
Hayao Miyazaki is a wonderful contemporary for our children to engage with. His delight in imagination and dedication to the craft of animation is deeply inspiring. On a backdrop of the war-torn Japan and the bomb sites playgrounds of his own childhood, we discover a man who kindles hope and love of nature and humanity in the films that he produces. The class enjoyed learning and sharing about their favorite Ghibli films, as well as becoming the animator pool for metamorphosis flip books whilst listening to Ghibli film music!

In memorium and gratitude to Rudolf Steiner, who died 100 years ago today. For your relentless love for humanity and for asking us to seek what it means to be human. For warning us of the descent into materialism and giving us hope for time beyond that for the earth and us in our eternal dance. For waiting for questions. For your impatience and your patience. For offering pathways to higher knowledge. For igniting the logos.

The age 8-12 children spent the morning with Alma Thomas, creating their own interpretations of her color expressions. She lived such a rich life and was such an inspiration for our time together. As an aside, the mandala symbol that Honeysuckle Hedge has used for some time now for social media, is oddly expanded upon and shown in full glory in her works. Thank you, Alma Thomas.
This age group will continue with biographies next month, learning about Beatrix Potter, whose homeschooling experiences in London opened her up to the world of fungi and honed her skilled drawings of the natural world.

Honeysuckle Hedge is for families homeschooling elementary age children (children turning 6-12 by June 15th, 2025).
