Need help getting to a medical appointment? Covering the cost of gas, transportation, or even a hotel stay can be a challenge when you’re already dealing with a health crisis.

The Southwest Nebraska Family Resource Center recently launched a new Patient Assistance Program funded through a grant from the McCook Community Hospital Health Foundation. In just six weeks, the program has already helped 17 people facing medical, dental, and mental health-related hardships.

The Resource Center is also seeing increased demand this summer for food, diapers, formula, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and incontinence products.

I recently sat down with Kaye T. Bieck to learn more about the new assistance program, current community needs, and upcoming events, including the Salvation Army Resource Fair.

I just wanted to take a minute to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone who continues to help the FRC thrive. ❤️

I have many talents, but backing up a trailer is definitely not one of them. This morning I realized I needed a grown-up, so I called a friend who graciously came to help. Along with two teen boys, the three of them helped move a bunch of furniture and equipment from downtown to the Resource Center. I am truly so thankful for you all — I honestly don’t know what I would have done without your help!

I also want to take a moment to thank some incredibly generous people and organizations in our community. We’ve had several donations come in to help support children’s summer programs and activities, including a pool pass for a family. Because of that generosity, we’ve already been able to help several local families with sports camps, pool passes, and other summer opportunities.

This has been such a blessing for families in our area! We still have a couple of scholarships available, so if you know of someone who may be in need, please reach out.

💙 Leading Our Region to a Healthier Future

Community Hospital is proud to partner with the Southwest Nebraska Family Resource Center to support patients and families through life’s unexpected medical challenges.

Through a $10,000 donation, the new Patient Assistance Fund will help individuals facing an acute medical situation access support for needs beyond medical care—like travel, missed work, and everyday expenses during recovery.

“This collaboration ensures patients have access to multiple layers of support,” said Jessica Bortner, Executive Director of the Community Hospital Health Foundation.

Together, we’re strengthening the support system for our patients—because care doesn’t stop at the hospital doors.

With the school year coming to a close, many families are feeling the added pressure of extra food costs over the summer and higher daycare expenses.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can help, here are two meaningful ways:

• The Family Resource Center keeps shelves stocked with free food items for anyone in need. If you have a few non‑perishable items to spare, please consider donating them—every little bit truly helps a local family.

• We recently received an incredible gift: someone generously sponsored two students to attend summer Football Camp. One spot has been filled, but we still have one more available for a student whose family meets financial requirements. If you’re looking for a way to give, sponsoring a child for Football Camp, Softball Camp, or an art class is a wonderful way to make a direct impact this summer.
