Here’s a quick recap of our final two days wrapping up our SWNLI year! We had a full and exciting schedule in Kearney and North Platte—visiting local businesses, organizations, and community spaces, learning from incredible leaders, and experiencing all the area has to offer.

We are so grateful to everyone who took the time to share their expertise and welcome us in. It truly made this experience meaningful.

What a great year it’s been—so fun to see this group grow, connect, and build relationships that will last well beyond this program!

Today the Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute class spent our Quality of Life Day learning from community leaders and exploring projects that help make Southwest Nebraska a great place to live, work, and grow.

Thank you to all of the speakers and organizations who shared your time, expertise, and passion with us today. We appreciate your investment in our communities and in the next generation of leaders!

Looking forward to our group retreat next month. 👏

SWNLI had an impactful Health & Human Services Day touring organizations that play a vital role in the wellbeing of Southwest Nebraska.

Participants visited Elevate Wellness & Physical Therapy, Ambience Counseling Services, Prairie Plains CASA, Mathew’s Place, the McCook Food Pantry, and Community Hospital. We also learned from partners at Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska and ABC Pregnancy Help Center about the essential services they provide to families in our region.

Thank you to all the organizations, staff, and volunteers who welcomed us and shared their work. Our communities are stronger because of you! 💙

On Wednesday we focused on Transportation, Communication, and Energy. We heard from volunteer speakers Pam Wolford and Caitlin Whitehead. We toured the airport, 911 dispatch, and the water treatment plant.

We ended the day with a leadership lesson from Lorrie.

Today was Business and Economic Day! Our class toured local facilities and organizations to learn about city planning, economic development, and what it takes to bring major projects—like the new ballfields—to life.

Thank you to Charlie and Amanda at the MEDC, Nate and his team with the City, and Jason and his team at Parker-Hannifin for welcoming us.

We also appreciated Sharleen, who shared insights from her leadership journey, and Ronda, who highlighted volunteer opportunities and ways to get connected in our community.

We ended the day with a motivating leadership lesson from Lorrie!

Last Wednesday, our Southwest Nebraska Leadership group participated in Education Day, and it was a full day of learning and connection! 🎓✨

We explored a variety of educational institutions and programs across McCook, including:
• Learning Express Preschool
• McCook Beauty Academy
• TeamMates Mentoring Program
• Community Hospital ROOTS Program
• MCC EMS/Paramedic Program

We wrapped up the day with an insightful lesson from Lorrie Mowry.

October 8, 2025 - The Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute class took the day to explore different businesses and careers within the Agriculture community.

Our day was filled with a journey to NA Timmerman’s, Farm Credit Services of America, and a special presentation from Jake Miller who owns and operates Live Wire Fencing and 7M Ranch.

Between the three different businesses we were able to learn about financing in agriculture, fencing, supplies, grass fed ranching, and even got to experience a corn flaker in action at the feedlot!

We cannot thank these businesses enough for allowing us the opportunity to learn more about the industry and share their knowledge with us!

We kicked off Government Day with a volunteer speaker Mitch Gross, followed by a trip to the City of McCook to learn about the many departments that keep the city running smoothly. Community speaker Dan Hughes shared valuable insights from his leadership journey, and we also had the chance to hear from a panel of city council members and a county commissioner, helping us understand the differences between city and county government.

Our day included tours of the Red Willow County Jail and the McCook Readiness Center, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at how these facilities serve our community. We wrapped up the day with an inspiring leadership lesson from Lorrie.

Kicking off the 2025–2026 SWNLI Class! 🎉
Today’s Orientation Day set the tone for an amazing year ahead.

We dove into a leadership lesson from Lorrie and learned about the importance of volunteering from Mayor Linda Taylor. The class also took a personality test, learned what SWNLI participation looks like, and explored all the ways they’ll grow and benefit over the next year.

To top it off, we participated in a fun scavenger hunt and team-building activity that let the class experience teamwork first-hand and get to know each other better.

The board is excited for another fun, impactful year with this talented group of leaders! 💡✨

🎉 Celebrating Quality of Life & Graduation Day! 🎉

What an incredible journey it has been with the 2024-2025 Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute class! Over the past 9 months, this group has grown together, explored our region, and developed skills to lead with purpose.

We wrapped up the year with a full and inspiring day focused on Quality of Life.

Highlights included:
🌱 A peaceful start with mindfulness
🌼 A visit to Garden Thyme Greenhouse
🏗️ A behind-the-scenes tour of the YMCA and exciting updates on its future
🏓 A fun and active pickleball session
🎨 A creative stop at the Art Bank
💡 And a final leadership lesson with Lorrie

We ended our day with a graduation ceremony and powerful insights from Mayor Linda Taylor. 👏

We’re so proud of this class and all they’ve accomplished—and we can't wait to see how they continue to grow and lead in our communities! 💛

Retreat was a success!! Thank you to our driver keeping us on point!

We reported on our volunteer hours, our open meeting act meeting and how we would like to get involved in our communities moving forward.

We visited the Nest Space, Yaney Park with Parks and Rec, The Tennis building, Kearney Chamber, North Platte Chamber, North Campus MPCC, South Campus MPCC, Walmart DC, ended with President Purdue about MPCC.

We did some team Building at Axe Holes.

Returned excited for what we can do!!
