Returning with another MoCo Business Spotlight in coordination with our Summer Social Media & Marketing Internship, it is our pleasure to highlight the one and only, El Palenque!

Opening in late 2019, El Palenque Mexican Restaurant in McConnelsville, Ohio has become a staple to the MoCo community. Serving traditional and modernized Mexican fare, with rotating and seasonal food and drink menus, El Palenque adds a unique and delicious dining option to the roster of local restaurants. Whether it’s Tuesday and you’re getting your taco fix, you need an event catered, or you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or even Cinco de Mayo, El Palenque and its warm and welcoming staff have you covered!

The owner and operator, Ricardo Godoy, came to the U.S. in 2004 and started his first El Palenque location in Duncan Falls in 2017. Ricardo and his staff were kind enough to let us order some menu items and practice some content creation, giving us some tips on which menu items were particularly photogenic. Considering how instagrammable most of the menu truly is, we had a pretty easy and fun time! The pop of color from the Nachos Supreme, the bright & pretty frozen drinks, and the sound and visual of a sizzling fajita platter…what more can you ask for when trying to get good food content?

El Palenque also does great at being a part of the community they serve. One of the first monetary donations MoCommSS ever received was from El Palenque! They’re also sponsoring youth baseball teams, hosting community gatherings, and participating in local festivals. They even worked with a local artist and Morgan County Community of the Arts member to paint much of the interior decorations in their dining room. Like any great, community oriented restaurant, El Palenque understands the importance of giving back and working within.

Next time you’re in McConnelsville, be sure to stop by, grab some food and drink, and take a picture with Bartolito the Rooster! They’re currently running their Spring Menu, and some of the items we got to try were FANTASTIC. Keep an eye out for their daily specials, and their branded line of merchandise too! Those branded clay cups look so cool…

A big shoutout again to El Palenque Mexican Restaurant for letting us come and spend some time with its staff and menu, to Ricardo and Majada for accommodating and putting up with us, and to Aidan our intern and Tiffany Roberts for helping generate the content!

Our Summer Food Systems & Agriculture Intern, Whitney Spencer, has been helping out with the Morgan County Community Gardens McConnelsville location these past few weeks, and we couldn't be more appreciative! This last week, Whitney helped treat some of our potato plants with Neem Oil and get some mulching completed. In addition to networking and visiting with local farms and food system organizations, Whitney is also helping out with the start of our 2026 community gardening season to get more acquainted with how the local MoCo food systems are supported!

Stay tuned for more Summer FS&AG Internship content, and reach out to the local community gardens group if you also want to get involved. As we enter our 3rd year of operations at the McConnelsville plot, we're growing as a group and getting more community involvement and we want to keep that momentum!

A big shoutout to The Wilds for networking with us! Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator, Mary Beth Sills, was able to chat with us and our summer education intern, Melena, on a Zoom call this last week about her professional background and role at The Wilds. Wanting to connect our intern with folks that create educational experiences outside of the classroom, Mary Beth talked about her work in facilitating educational programming with local Ohio elementary students and The Wilds. She discussed the challenges in getting the programming up and running, the curriculums and activities she was able to provide, and the positive and rewarding experiences that both her and the students were able to obtain. "I've always been a latent educator" Mary Beth remarked as she talks about her affinity for working with students and volunteers, and she certainly proves that in her awesome ability at connecting folks with conservation sciences!

We cannot thank Mary Beth enough for her time and knowledge, and for The Wilds for everything they do to support education on these important topics. Also, correction on the Zoom screenshot networking photo, but that portrait of the person holding the baby mammal on the far right is NOT Mary Beth, but another employee at The Wilds! Our apologies on the mix up!

“My name is Whitney Spencer and I’m currently a junior at Morgan High School. I was born and raised in Morgan County and at school I am involved in FFA and cosmetology. Our Summer Social Media & Marketing Intern, Aidan Mayle, recently met with owner & operator of Dapper Dachshund Photography, and executive director at the Twin City Opera House, Tiffany Roberts. We always enjoy connecting local photographers with our social media and marketing interns to give them some insight into how creative you can be with a camera. Tiffany helped Aidan capture some content for an upcoming Business Spotlight on El Palenque we'll be posting! Stay tuned yall...

Through our Summer Education Internship, we had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Teri Peasley from Ohio University Zanesville for a professional networking meeting!

We always connect our interns with professionals in their field of interest, and our internship supervisor Jensen Peyton was kind enough to connect us with one of her professors at OUZ. Dr. Peasley is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for Early Childhood and Elementary Education, and was able to hop on a Zoom call with us to chat about her educational and professional background, her perspectives on being an educator, and some golden advice for students beginning their own career in education. With Melena interested in pursuing a degree in early childhood education, Dr. Peasley brought a wealth of knowledge and insight to the meeting. A big shoutout to Dr. Peasley for her time and for the chat, these meetings are always an informal and productive way to get students better engaged with their career interests!

Stay tuned for ongoing MoCommSS Summer Internship activities!

For today’s Meet the Team Tuesday, meet Aidan Mayle, Social Media and Marketing Intern!

“Hi, my name is Aidan and I'm in the ninth grade. I’m a Morgan High School student and my biggest interests are shooting sports, and quantum physics. Last year I placed second in the state for the intermediate division of trap shooters, which was a really big accomplishment for me. Outside of shooting, I like riding my bike. I am really interested in quantum physics even though I don't know everything yet. I think it's really interesting and I want to learn more about it. I wanted this internship because I’ve always been interested in learning about marketing specifically and I want to start a business of my own one day and I really would love to learn about how to promote and push my business out to others. I hope to learn as much as I can. When I think about Morgan county I think about how much everyone has done for me specifically in Chesterhill. Everywhere you look there's nice people ready to have your back.”

Aidan has already begun attending networking opportunities and taking some great photos of org activities this month, stay tuned to see more!

MoCommSS has officially kicked off it's 2026 trash clean-up series! We got a little rained out last Saturday, but still got 30 lbs of trash clean-up off our St. Rt. 78 route we maintain through ODOT's Adopt-A-Highway program. All three of our summer interns came out to help, as well as some of our directors, and some new faces! A big shoutout to our interns Whitney and Melena for taking time out of their Saturdays to beautify our community, Aidan for getting some great content of the event, and our volunteers Kayla and Jill for showing up and showing out! We wouldn't be able to accomplish these service projects without the help of all of our friends, family, and volunteers and cannot thank them enough for their time and energy!

Interested in helping out at one of our clean-ups? Our next one is Saturday, June 20th, at 11am, at our same route on St Rt 78. Check our FB page for that event to register, and let us know if you have any questions!

This last week we attended the 2026 Middle School Career Day, and had a great time connecting with students! One of our directors came out to talk about their career, as well as two of our summer interns. Our social media & marketing intern, Aidan, captured some great content of the event while our education intern, Melena, toured some of the exhibits and learned more about career outreach strategies. These events are always great ways to connect students with careers they're interested and we're always happy to attend and help out!

Keep an eye out for ongoing MoCommSS content as we continue on with our summer internship programming. We have in-service activities, networking meetings, outreach events, and more in the pipeline this summer, and are excited to continue sharing them with you!

This week for Meet the Team Tuesday, we are excited to start introducing our 2026 summer interns! This week, meet Melena Mayle, Education Intern!

“Hello, my name is Melena Mayle. I am currently finishing my junior year at Morgan High School. I have always lived in Morgan County and been fortunate to attend school here. It is schools like South Elementary, Morgan Jr. High, and now Morgan High School that I credit with building the solid foundations of my education. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball and softball, hanging out with my friends, and I’m always up for a shopping trip. When I think of Morgan county, I think of a close-knit community where everyone knows everyone, and you can always count on your neighbors to have your back in a time of need.”

We are so excited to continue our internship program this summer, and keep an eye out for upcoming posts highlighting all the cool things our interns will be getting into in the coming weeks!
