McCloud Local First Network

McCloud Local First Network Further, we seek to support the local schools and provide opportunity for rural youth to get involved in community stewardship and economic development.

We are a not-for-profit membership organization committed to creatively sustaining and growing local businesses, ourselves as business leaders, and our communty. Network projects include:
* Digital Media Outreach
* Youth Video Education
* Tourism Development
* Hike & Bike Trail Development

The McCloud Local First Network (MLFN) was formed in 2009 to be a positive force for sustainable economic d

evelopment in a town divided over a proposal for a large water bottling plant. We have partnered with other non-profit organizations on a number of initiatives – new roof for the Museum, with the Alumni Association proposed re-use of historic building threatened with destruction, and, with four other non-profits, formed the Great Shasta Rail Trail (GSRT). We work with the local Chamber of Commerce on a number of initiatives, working to train business owners to be bicycle-friendly, installing bike racks around town, and starting a new event (Bike-toberfest) to raise funds for the GSRT. We provide fiscal sponsorship to the McCloud ARTS initiative, supporting efforts to make the Arts part of the McCloud community, particularly in the local schools. Developing successful citizens, residents who are involved in their community, will go a long way toward evolving the sustainable economic vitality that we seek for our communities. We are excited that the Digital Media Outreach Program will provide urgently needed opportunities for local youth to find an effective place in their community. We are a flexible, agile organization, staying active in our community, identifying initiatives that will benefit the community, and bringing those indicatives to a successful conclusion. Our biggest project (jointly developed in partnership with 4 area non-profits), the GSRT (80 miles of rail-trail connecting McCloud and Burney), has been turned over to a new non-profit that owns and manages this public recreation facility.

Shasta’s little sister black butte

Black Butte – Mt. Shasta City, CA. Yesterday, friends Frank Kratofil, Frank Tona and I went to shoot Mt. Shasta. We drove around seeking an unobstructed vantage point, as the clouds were covering it from most angles. We made it to this spot just in the nick of time to shoot at peak light, which I found favored Black Butte instead of the intended subject Mt. Shasta. And that was fine by me because I do like this picture quite a bit, particularly the vertical orientation as opposed to the horizontal one (not pictured).

It’s becoming a tradition that we go out to eat during our shoots. Unfortunately, I don’t hike well at all on a full stomach. That being said, the restaurants we’ve eaten at have generally been pretty good. I think I’m going to have to offer restaurant reviews with each image…lol. BTW, on this trip we ate at The Pizza Factory in W**d. It was good. [Tap For Uncropped View]

Today is Giving Tuesday, and we're urging folks to support our sister non-profit Great Shasta Rail Trail Association on the NorthStateGives.org site today between 6 am and 8 pm. Donations made there will support the efforts of a small group of hardworking volunteers to develop a great asset for the local community and its visitors. Thanks for joining in, if you can!

Today is Giving Tuesday! We're supporting the Great Shasta Rail Trail in its efforts to raise funds - and earn a big boost from the event sponsors. Join the movement and give back at www.northstategives.org. Thanks so much!

Nonprofits share in an incentive pool based on the amount they raise. Random hourly prize drawings add to the anticipation to boost nonprofit totals.

Christina Schmidlin reports that Leon’s Story, a video project funded by Laura’s Literacy Project is on schedule. We should see a video about the dangers of drinking and driving focused on teens by mid-September.

Don't Ask Why, Ask Why Not. We want to portray what it’s truly like to travel as a family of three on two motorcycles and put together a documentary film.

I just signed a petition to Governor Jerry Brown urging him to protect and increase vital funding for walking, biking and active transportation. I hope you will too!

You might recognize some of the locales in this clip. More to come in 2013. Cheers!

The Borden family lives an exciting life. They travel the world together on motorcycles. We all know that Nick is a motorcycle enthusiast. The last time Nick talked to them, he admitted how badly he wanted to join them on their adventures. Well, now he'll be on every single one.
