ERDA: Birth of New Forms was a joint exhibition by Pinky ( M.M.) Bass and Kitty (Clara) Couch in 1994, centered on photographs they took in the McClellanville area after Hurricane Hugo. The exhibit included driftwood and debris along with large ceramic spheres and other organic shapes. Erda is the Norse goddess of the earth, nature, wisdom, and fate. She is a central figure in Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle operas, where she serves as an all-knowing oracle who understands the origins and destiny of the world.

Pinky and Kitty later returned to McClellanville towing a pop-up camper converted into a giant camera obscura--otherwise known as a pinhole camera--to lead a class for children and adults.

Jimmy McClellan, who died last weekend at age 91, was a poet and a gifted sculptor who worked in wood and porcelain. In 1987 the Arts Council hosted a solo exhibit of his work, From Wood to Clay, which featured bird sculptures, and he also sold work in our shop. Jimmy was a master gardener who cultivated native plants. Billy Baldwin visited Jimmy's garden many times over the years, photographing at different seasons, and in 2003 Billy and Jimmy presented a show at the Arts Center called Wilderness Garden featuring some of the photos along with a talk about gardening by Jimmy. All photographs are by William P. Baldwin.
