Just four area restaurants tested by researchers last month were found to be selling local, wild-caught shrimp when advertised.
A team from SEAD Consulting, a Texas-based research firm, spent four days in May sampling shrimp from 44 Charleston-area restaurants to sniff out "shrimp fraud," or identify restaurants that are advertising fresh product but in reality are serving customers imported, farm-raised shrimp.
