Leadership McAllen What is Leadership McAllen? Following a hostile McAllen Mayoral election in 1981, there was real concern that the community had been divided.

Mission: To identify and motivate emerging leaders and to develop their potential for community leadership by exposing them to the realities, opportunities, and challenges facing McAllen and its citizens. Feelings and trust on all sides of the political spectrum were frayed. Fortunately, not everyone was caught up in the debate. The late Dr. Charles Wilson, Danny Boultinghouse and Joseph Garza saw the crisis for its potential, and sought to find a way to draw McAllen back together. Over a period of several months, they researched programs around Texas and the nation. They met with community and business leaders and embarked on a very risky venture loaded with the potential to do well, but fraught with considerable risk. They discovered an idea that had successfully worked in other communities. This idea is known as Leadership McAllen.

Leadership McAllen board members have been diligently preparing for another impactful class year. Through our board retreats, we’ve come together to collaborate, strategize, and strengthen our vision for developing engaged and future-focused leaders.

Our collective efforts reflect a shared commitment to investing in leadership, strengthening our community, and creating meaningful opportunities for leaders across all industries. We look forward to an inspiring year ahead and the lasting impact this next class will make in our community.

***Leadership McAllen Alumini Spotlight***
We are proud to highlight LM Alumni Michael Fallek this month.

Michael Fallek is a born and raised, third-generation McAllen resident. Michael was Salutatorian of his class at McHi, earned his undergraduate degree with highest honors at UT - Austin with a Phi Beta Kappa designation, and he received his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law.
After working at a large law firm in Phoenix, Michael moved back to McAllen in 1999 with his wife, Heather, with whom he raised two children. Michael is President of Castle Hospitality, where he handles the legal, finance, development and corporate matters for the company. Castle is s real estate firm specializing in the hospitality industry and, along with its related companies and business partners, has developed 15 hotels, 10 restaurants and a number of office and industrial parks, retail centers and state and federal government offices. All told, the affiliated companies have created over 1000 jobs and employed thousands of people over the years throughout McAllen, the Rio Grande Valley and the State of Texas. The Castle team has also been heavily involved in supporting many of the developmental, charitable and service organizations operating in McAllen.
Since returning to McAllen, Michael has devoted significant time to public service, much of which started from his experience with Leadership McAllen. Michael continues to believe strongly in the mission of Leadership McAllen, and he remains extremely proud of receiving the Alex Longoria Award. Michael was in LM Class XX, served on the board for many years, including two terms as Program Chair, and he was Chairman of Class ###.
Michael’s community leadership includes:

• Former Chairman and Board Member, McAllen Planning and Zoning Commission
• Current Member, McAllen Economic Development Corporation
• Former Chairman, Leadership McAllen, supporting the city’s next generation of leaders

• Former Board and Executive Team Member, McAllen Chamber of Commerce
• Former Chairman, McAllen Convention Center Advisory Board
• Current Board Member, Valley Symphony Orchestra
• Former Board Member, American Heart Association

We’re excited to kick off the journey for our 46th cohort of Leadership McAllen. 🎉 Over the coming months, they’ll dive into the key issues shaping our community such as the economy, healthcare, and public services.

We can’t wait to see the impact this group will make in McAllen and beyond.

A very special congratulations to Melina Recio for being named the recipient of the prestigious Alex Longoria Award — a well-deserved honor recognizing outstanding leadership and dedication.

Leadership McAllen Alumni Star Spotlight.

We are proud to shine the spotlight this week on LM superstar, Austin Stevenson

Austin Stevenson has provided in-house legal counsel to the City of McAllen for over a decade and currently serves as City Attorney.

His municipal law practice encompasses all legal issues in which the City may have an interest, including state and federal civil litigation, in-house general counsel, land use, zoning, employment, open records, economic development, public utilities, and procurement.

Austin holds a BA in Spanish and a BBA in International Business from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin as well as a Juris Doctorate from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.

He is a grateful alumnus of Leadership McAllen Class ###VI and was honored to later serve as Chairman. Austin is a previous Director of the Texas Young Lawyers Association and the Hidalgo County Young Lawyers Association.

This week’s Leadership McAllen session focused on economic development across the RGV, and it was nothing short of inspiring. We had the opportunity to hear from incredible speakers who are actively shaping the growth and future of our region, and we even got an inside look with a tour of the GR Fresh facility—thank you for hosting us and allowing us to use your space for such a meaningful class.
