McAllen is strategically located four-miles north of Reynosa, Mexico and has access to three international bridges. Labor availability, lowers costs, strategic location for distribution, turn-key operations and land availability have prompted companies around the world to view manufacturing in Mexico as an attractive option. Being on the border gives companies the dynamic of manufacturing in Mexico - the number one location for manufactured goods destined for the American market, while their key personnel and management team and his/her family can live in the United States in McAllen, Texas - ranked #14 safest city in the United States in 2010. This location decision creates a win-win situation for Reynosa and McAllen. From a logistics perspective, the strategic location of McAllen, Texas and Reynosa, Mexico enables companies to reduce and control direct and indirect labor costs while being located within close proximity of the largest supplier clusters in Mexico and the United States. Regular check-ups equal an increased chance of survival rate; early detection is key; 1 in 3 new cancer diagnosis in U.S. women is breast cancer; everyone has breast tissue - men are susceptible, too.

McAllen Economic Development Corporation congratulates UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) on receiving a $5 million grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration in support of advanced manufacturing and small business growth across the Rio Grande Valley.

Presenting the award was U.S. SBA Deputy Administrator Bill Briggs and receiving the check was Professor Dr. Jianzhi "James" Li, PI and Director of UTRGV Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Dr. Magdalena Hinojosa, Executive VP for Strategic Initiatives & Student Affairs and Deputy to the President.

The funding will support UTRGV’s EMPOWER-RGV initiative, providing hands-on training and technical assistance to small manufacturers while strengthening workforce development, operational capabilities, and opportunities for regional business growth.

This significant investment is another important step in advancing the Rio Grande Valley’s manufacturing ecosystem and preparing our businesses and workforce for the future.

South Texas College will soon be launching a new cohort of their Construction Superintendent Apprenticeship Program, with a projected start date of October 12.

Currently there is grant funding available to cover tuition and course materials, making this a valuable opportunity for individuals looking to strengthen their skills and advance within the construction industry.

Today marks 25 years of dedicated service to the McAllen Economic Development Corporation for Susie Flores, Vice President of Business Recruitment.

For a quarter century, Susie has played an important role in MEDC’s business recruitment efforts, building relationships with companies, site selectors, community partners, and industry leaders while helping promote McAllen and our region as a destination for investment and opportunity.

The 25-year milestone represents more than years of service—it reflects countless relationships built, companies assisted, projects supported, and opportunities created for our community.

The MEDC Board of Directors and President & CEO Elizabeth Suarez applauded Susie's contributions to MEDC and our community during this week's board meeting.

Local restaurant receives international accolade!

The Consulado de México en McAllen awarded Momole the prestigious Sello M Gastronomy Certification. The certification is an elite honor awarded directly by the Government of Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Mexican Academy of Gastronomy. It recognizes restaurants outside of Mexico that strictly preserve ancestral cooking techniques, use authentic ingredients, and serve as true cultural ambassadors of Mexican gastronomy.

The restaurant, located in the Mercado District, is the only one in South Texas to receive this distinction.

The McAllen Economic Development Corporation was pleased to participate in today’s COSTEP-Rio South Texas Region Quick Tour with the Cluster Automotriz Metropolitano, connecting with automotive industry leaders and companies interested in learning more about opportunities across the Rio Grande Valley.

MEDC shared insight into the economic development tools and incentive programs available at the municipal, county, and state levels, as well as the key factors communities consider when supporting new investment—including job creation, capital investment, new construction, and the overall economic impact of a project.

Events like these are an important opportunity to strengthen cross-border relationships, showcase the advantages of our region, and continue positioning the Rio Grande Valley as a competitive destination for advanced manufacturing and automotive investment.
