Derek Frazier, Vice President of Financial Development and Marketing for NewView Oklahoma, delivered a presentation to the McAlester Lions Club on Thursday, February 12, highlighting the organization’s statewide impact and ongoing mission to empower Oklahomans who are blind or living with low vision.

NewView Oklahoma is dedicated to maximizing opportunities for independence for individuals at every stage of life. As the state’s leading employer of citizens who are blind or have low vision, NewView Oklahoma employs nearly 150 adults across Oklahoma, providing meaningful careers and fostering economic independence.

During his remarks, Frazier emphasized the organization’s comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and community engagement. Through community outings, assistive technology training, and individualized support, NewView Oklahoma enables blind and low-vision adults to actively participate in their communities. Programs focus on helping individuals remain safe, care for themselves confidently, and overcome anxiety often associated with vision loss.

A cornerstone of NewView Oklahoma’s services is Orientation and Mobility training — the foundation of all clinic and rehabilitation programs. Following an initial assessment of existing skills, participants receive personalized instruction and adaptive equipment to travel safely and efficiently in a variety of environments, enhancing both independence and quality of life.

Frazier also recognized the support of Lions Clubs International Foundation, which has provided grant funding to NewView Oklahoma as part of its global initiative to assist individuals who are blind or have low vision. This partnership strengthens the organization’s ability to expand services and reach more Oklahomans in need.

“Community partnerships like those with the Lions are vital to our mission,” Frazier said. “Together, we are creating opportunities that empower individuals to live independently and confidently.”

McAlester Police Patrolman William Jackson and his K9 partner, Boyka, were guest speakers at a recent meeting of the McAlester Lions Club, where they shared insight into the role of K9 units in local law enforcement.

During the presentation, Patrolman Jackson explained that he and Boyka completed extensive, specialized training designed to help them work seamlessly as a team. That training enables Boyka to detect illegal drugs and assist officers by apprehending suspects who attempt to flee or avoid arrest.

Patrolman Jackson emphasized the importance of the bond between handler and K9, noting that trust, consistency, and ongoing training are critical to the team’s effectiveness and safety in the field.

Members of the Lions Club had the opportunity to learn more about how K9 units support police operations and enhance public safety throughout the community.
