“Three years ago, I returned to Russia after undergoing treatment for poisoning. I was arrested at the airport, and now I’ve been sitting in Prison for three years.
“Why did you come back?”
Answering this question, I already feel a mild annoyance of two kinds. The first is towards myself, for not finding words that would make everyone understand and stop asking. The second is towards the Russian politics of the last decade, which has ingrained cynicism and conspiracy theories in society to the extent that people generally don’t believe in simple motives.
I have my country and my beliefs. And I don’t want to give up either my country or my beliefs. And I cannot betray either the first or the second. If your beliefs mean something, you must be ready to stand up for them. And if necessary, make sacrifices.
I participated in elections and vied for leadership positions. The demand for a different story came from me. I traveled all over the country and declared from the stage everywhere: “I promise that I won’t let you down, I won’t deceive you, and I won’t abandon you.” Returning, I kept my promise to my voters. There must be, after all, those in Russia who don’t lie to them.
It so happened that in Russia now, for my right to have and not conceal my beliefs, I have to pay by sitting in a solitary cell. And, of course, I don’t like sitting. But I won’t renounce my ideas or my homeland.”
