Mazama Residency /2011
an initiative curated by Valerio Borgonuovo, Silvia Franceschini and Abigail Napp

Goat Wall View House in Mazama and different venues in the Methow Valley [Washington State]
from 2nd to 16th August 2011

Selected participants in residency: Danilo Correale / Adelita Husni-Bey | Fabian Jaggi | Raneen Nosh | Paolo Patelli | Luca Pozzi | Eddie Spanier | Giuditta Vendrame

Emerg

ing artists, architects, designers and researchers are invited to come together in the remote foothills of the Cascade Mountains of Washington State for two weeks in order to take part in the formulation of an integrative research platform through a program of meetings and workshops with experts, seminars and public lectures, field investigations, personal and collective projects as well as a broader involvement of the local community. During their stay in Mazama each participant will pe*****te this unique and suggestive land, developing personal projects conceptualized on and through their residency experience; while keeping the need alive for fruitful integration within a system of networked relations, in a field not defined by spatial boundaries but by the result of the interconnections between them. Since the structure of a field is horizontal and centerless, participants will be encouraged to counterbalance its shifting, widespread nature by deciding on a common, stable and iconic point on the landscape; a conceptual landmark to serve as a central meeting point for work, discussion and exchange. Local, regional and international professionals in the field of art as well as impassioned supporters of the arts will be invited to meet the participants and learn about their activities and researches. In addition, there will be a donor’s dinner to bring together locals and the participants for an evening of celebration and discussion.

“Three years ago, I returned to Russia after undergoing treatment for poisoning. I was arrested at the airport, and now I’ve been sitting in Prison for three years.
“Why did you come back?”
Answering this question, I already feel a mild annoyance of two kinds. The first is towards myself, for not finding words that would make everyone understand and stop asking. The second is towards the Russian politics of the last decade, which has ingrained cynicism and conspiracy theories in society to the extent that people generally don’t believe in simple motives.
I have my country and my beliefs. And I don’t want to give up either my country or my beliefs. And I cannot betray either the first or the second. If your beliefs mean something, you must be ready to stand up for them. And if necessary, make sacrifices.
I participated in elections and vied for leadership positions. The demand for a different story came from me. I traveled all over the country and declared from the stage everywhere: “I promise that I won’t let you down, I won’t deceive you, and I won’t abandon you.” Returning, I kept my promise to my voters. There must be, after all, those in Russia who don’t lie to them.
It so happened that in Russia now, for my right to have and not conceal my beliefs, I have to pay by sitting in a solitary cell. And, of course, I don’t like sitting. But I won’t renounce my ideas or my homeland.”

Posted • OUT NOW: Style Congo: Heritage & Heresy explores the politics of cultural representation and appropriation through contemporary artistic and architectural interventions, as well as historical materials primarily from the CIVA collection in Brussels. Starting with the Art Nouveau movement and stemming from the exhibition of the same name, this book traces the portrayal of the Congo in international and colonial exhibitions in Belgium, France, and the Congo between 1885 and 1958.

The book is published in three separate language editions - in French, English, and Dutch.

Tekla Ashtanavily’s “A State in an State” is not only a beautiful film but it’s also one of the most compelling works I’ve seen in the last months delving into the Ukrainian/Russian conflict by looking at the railroad as a tool of connectivity but also as a weapon of exclusion and geopolitical sabotage.

The film is an experimental documentary that follows the construction, disruption, and fragmentation of railroads in the South Caucasus and Caspian regions. It examines railways as the technical materialization of the fragile political borders that have reemerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It also explores the potential of railroads for building a different, infrastructural consciousness and the lasting, transnational, kinship among the people who live and work around them.
