The county’s Mjosen Sons of Norway and Carl Ben Eielson Museum teamed up with the Delchar Theater last night to host an almost full theater for a showing of “Over the Top of the World”, the story of Hatton son Carl Ben Eielson. The short documentary was sandwiched between an intro and Q and A as audience members were treated to tasty bags of popcorn for an enjoyable and educational night on the town. The Eielson Museum is available for tours on request off-season, but reopens Memorial Day, 2026 for their summer hours. The museum is the former home of the Eielson family. More info on the Mjosen Sons of Norway and Traill County’s three museums are available on their pages. Pictured: Becky Gunderson and Gary Lillemoen. Photo compliments of Thaddeus Stevens.

Night at the Museum celebrated its last night with arrival of our latest acquisition, live music featuring Jim White, History Bytes with Tom and Cheryl (Gummer) Moen and Ina Paulson, and a busy night for Nancy Drew and friends at historic sewing machines with families stitching up some fun. Thank you to all of those individuals and businesses who underwrote, lent equipment and volunteered, and to all who attended and supported our summer fundraising events, which brought people as well as the 1950 Mayville Fire Department truck to the museum. Stop in and see us during the last summer Sunday afternoons before we close to do exhibit work and prep for winter. We appreciate your continued support and interest in what made Mayville a marvelous place to live, then and now!

Come join us for our final event of the summer this Wednesday with live music, great food, and loads of history. Special guests include Nancy Drew, who’ll be in the kitchen stitching up a demo on one of our 1890s treadle sewing machines and whipping up a make-and-take project with children attendees.

This month’s featured history lessons on one of Mayville’s oldest families, the Gummers, can be found inside the Depot waiting room, scavenger hunt guides will help you explore what the museum has to offer, and Mayville’s Fire and Rescue will be on hand to tell you more about its history and service to Traill County.

This event is open to one and all! Bring your lawn chair, family, friends and an appetite for fun!

Exploring a Vintage American Number 7 Sewing Machine

This week we went to the museum to learn about the American No. 7 sewing machine.
Manufactured by the American B.H.O. & Sewing Machine Co., this machine was a popular model introduced in the 1880s. It was known for its elegant design, durability, and innovative features for the time,
but the real treasure was watching our special guest for August’s Night at the Museum bring it to life!

Ladies & Gentlemen, meet Nancy Drew.

Today, we’re highlighting the oldest congregation in Mayville—the Mayville Congregational (now United Church of Christ), founded on May 14, 1881 in J. Rosholt’s feed store. The first sermon was preached by Rev. David Wirt that July, outdoors in front of the Boyum Store!

By 1882, the congregation had built its first church (now the old American Lutheran Church building) at the cost of just $1,200.
Over the following years, several pastors—including E. W. Butler—served a growing and active church.

Today, located at 111 Center Ave N, it continues as a local spiritual anchor, active in worship, community service, and outreach.

Did you know Mayville has a proud tradition of beard contests going back nearly 70 years? The first big one took place in 1956 during the Centennial celebration, with locals growing out their finest facial hair for a shot at glory.

By 1976, the competition was still going strong — and legend has it, Unga Carlson took home the win for “most colors in a beard.” (That’s hometown talent right there!) The contest returned again in 1981, continuing the tradition of honoring both heritage and humor.

These community moments weren’t just fun — they were snapshots of local pride. Do you remember any of the winners? Did your dad or grandpa compete? Share your stories in the comments!

This is George O. Sommer, one of Mayville’s early pioneers. He arrived in 1881, married Mary Jaques in 1885, and helped shape local banking and business for decades. He later opened his own insurance office right here in town and remained active in the community until his passing in 1950. A quiet force behind Mayville’s growth — and one of many stories preserved at the Goose River Heritage Center.
