We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Mayor and City Commissioners for their recent approval to increase Maysville Fire Department staffing from 8 firefighters per shift to 10. Also, thank you Chief Carpenter for advocating for your men and women.

This increase has been needed for many years. Providing fire protection to the City of Maysville while also delivering EMS coverage throughout all of Mason County is a tremendous responsibility. As call volumes continue to grow, our firefighters are regularly asked to balance numerous emergencies throughout the county simultaneously.

For a long time, our engine companies have operated with only two firefighters assigned to them, typically an officer and an engineer. In today's fire service, two-person engine companies are exceptionally rare. The addition of two firefighters per shift will allow us to increase staffing on our engine companies from two personnel to three, significantly improving our ability to perform fireground operations and rescues.

It will also provide flexibility when ambulance resources are tied up on calls. If both frontline ambulances are busy, firefighters assigned to an engine company can respond in an ambulance to ensure EMS coverage remains available to the citizens of Mason County. Having more guys on the engines makes this possible while still maintaining fire protection for the City of Maysville.

To put it in perspective, our last staffing increase was in 2016. We are very thankful to the Mayor and Commissioners for recognizing these needs and for their continued support of MFD. Their commitment to public safety will have a lasting impact on the firefighters who serve this community and the citizens who depend on us every day.
