Today we are remembering Carl Smith, one of the true voices of classic country music. Born 99 years ago in Maynardville, Tennessee, Smith became one of the biggest male stars of the 1950s and earned the nickname “Mister Country” from fans who loved his strong, traditional sound.

During his incredible run, Carl Smith scored 30 Top 10 hits on the Billboard country charts. Even more impressive, 21 of those songs reached the Top 10 in a row. That kind of streak helped cement his place as one of the era’s most successful and respected artists.

His story is also closely tied to country music royalty. Smith was married to June Carter, who would later become June Carter Cash, and he was the father of singer Carlene Carter.

Carl Smith passed away on January 16, 2010, but his music and legacy still live on with country fans today.
