Copying this here also from the response to post on mayflower neighborhood.
First regarding the burn piles, these have been accumulating for the last 2 years and had to be burnt and was NOT on top of anyone’s grave. It will look much better than a pile of trash next to the gravesites.
We do pay someone to mow and clean up but not to maintain people’s headstones. He is not a full time maintenance. We cannot afford that our plots are very inexpensive compared to cemeteries that have full time maintenance.
We really do need a annual clean up day, the people that managed the last one won’t do it anymore because of all the complaints we received.
We have hired extra help with mowing in the summer so hopefully this spring and summer you will notice it looks much better.
Our land was purchased and some donated many years ago. It is owned by the mayflower cemetery and a board manages it
The cost used to be 300.00 a plot it is now 500.00 a plot. We do ask for a 10.00 per year donation per plot. If everyone in city limits gave 10.00 per year we could afford more upkeep. But we do not get that many donations. Other cemeteries charge 2000-5000 to be buried and they can only have flowers attached to headstones so it can actually be mowed properly. We want our community to be able to afford to be buried and people to be able to put things they love on the graves but the rules need to be followed
Rules to purchase a plot are you have to have immediate family that have plots there or a resident of mayflower for atleast 25 years
Ornaments must be kept within 6 inches of headstone. No Glass. People that have enclosures around your plots are responsible for maintenance inside enclosures. I do ask if you have enclosures that are old and not maintained contact us and we will remove them and keep it mowed. It’s difficult to mow around those. It’s also difficult for funeral homes and grave diggers to get in to dig someone’s grave they have big equipment that has to get in. In some areas it’s nearly impossible.
The wind blows things everywhere out there. If you have a straddle write your name on it and he will try to replace them but old faded flowers that are not attached will be thrown away. We do care about this cemetery or I would not be donating my time. I spend a couple hours a week dealing with this cemetery. Anybody is welcome to go out anytime and pick up limbs old flowers w**d eat any thing helps. We will have a meeting in January I will announce the time if anyone wants to come and submit there ideas.
We have spoken with mayor about the idea of city taking over the cemetery and both agreed it’s not the right time for that but I do think in future it’s something that needs to happen.
Again I will post the time of meeting in January and we welcome all suggestions but we don’t welcome fussing and fighting and accusations. We are all doing the best we can.
