Thoughts from my friend, Kevin Parent (shared with his permission):

One thing of many I've learned in Toastmasters #3.

One of the biggest moments in the journey of many Toastmasters comes when they risk going it without notes.

'But, what if I forget my next line?' you ask. Don't. It's the wrong question.

You will forget something. If not this speech then in another one. But that moment when you forget is when you really become a speaker. You cannot rely on notes and connect with the audience. If your lips are saying one line while your brain is buffering up the next line, you're not communicating, or at least you're not communicating what you think you are.

The question isn't 'What if I forget' It's 'How am I going to handle it?'

It'll probably help if you try to answer that before the speech, but ultimately, you won't know until it happens. And that moment, like it or not, when you realise you've forgotten what you had planned to say next, you're going to be real.

And the more opportunities you give yourself to be real, on stage, before a group of people, the more you're going to grow.

Using notes means you don't trust yourself. And if you don't trust yourself, why should your audience?

So you can use your notes to give a pitch-perfect performance, or you could give an imperfect speech where you trust yourself enough to forget something. I know which kind of mistake I'd rather watch a speaker make.

And the more you do it, the more you'll forget lines, and you'll not only learn how to deal with that without people realising you've forgotten anything, but you'll also learn to make speeches that don't have to be memorised.

Speak from your heart, not your working memory.
