We are inviting you next to be a part of ... PERFORMANCE NIGHT! In place of our next French Conversation meeting, on Thursday March 12 from 7 to 8 pm at the Matthews Community Center, there will be two performances.
The "menu" for the evening will consist of a Medieval comic play by Minuit and Paola, called "La Farce de Maître Pathelin" by an anonymous author in 1464, and a presentation by Monsieur Charlie:
Andre Michaux Live
Before our eyes, author and scholar Charlie Williams will bring French Botanist Andre Michaux (1746-1802) to life for half an hour. Michaux was a major figure in international botany in the late 18th century. King Louis XVI appointed him Royal Botanist and sent him to America in 1785. He is noted for his contributions to botany, horticulture, forestry, and agriculture. Michaux rose on his own merits from simple farmer on a royal estate to join the ranks of the Institut de France, the country’s most important scientific body.
During his decade living and working in America, Michaux met many of the men we now call the “Founding Fathers” and traveled throughout eastern North America. He especially liked the North Carolina mountains and climbed several of our highest peaks including a celebrated ascent of Grandfather Mountain in 1794 when he sang the Marseillaise into the wind from the summit. Michaux maintained nursery gardens in both New Jersey and Charleston and he visited the Charlotte region several times.
So please come ready to listen and be entertained!
