On a weekend when so many of us get together to watch the big game, the South Suburban Association Chiefs of Police reminds you to celebrate responsibly. Never get behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs.

When you plan ahead to have a designated driver, everyone leaves a winner.

Black History Month is a chance to reflect on the Black experience in America and the many achievements of Black Americans in the face of great adversity. It's also a time to celebrate the significant contributions to who we are, both as a nation as well as locally here in the south suburbs of Chicago. Black history is our history.

And it is a history that continues to be created today, including among the police departments represented by our association. We invite all to reflect on what this month means to us collectively and individually.

Historical Overview of the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police (SSACOP)

In the years following WWII, crime in the United States escalated rapidly and could no longer be controlled by outdated concepts of Law Enforcement in our communities and throughout the United States. This situation grew so severe that citizen fear of being victims of crime became a national issue.

In the early nineteen sixties, South and Southwest Suburban Police Chiefs felt the need to organize in order to provide a vehicle for the exchange of information and mutual assistance. Though the organization was not incorporated with the Secretary of State until January 7, 1969, it existed on a more casual and social basis.

Founding members who contributed to the professional growth of SSACOP included; Chief John Braschler, Lansing; Chief Albert Breitzman, Evergreen Park; Chief Wilbur Ellis, Matteson; Chief William Hamby, Park Forest; Chief Gerhard "Ace" Hein, Oak Lawn; Chief Harold Moore, Tinley Park; and Chief John Rinkema, South Holland.
