-MAINE ATV REGISTRATION UPDATE-
Today I attended the Landowners and Land Users Relations Advisory Board (LLURAB) meeting in Bangor.
For those unfamiliar with the LLURAB, this committee includes representatives from small woodland owners, large landowners, farmers, hunters, anglers, trappers, outdoor recreation groups, environmental organizations, and North Maine Woods recreation management. The board also includes non-voting representatives from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Bureau of Warden Service, the Department of Economic and Community Development, and the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
This is a diverse group of stakeholders with the same goal: balancing recreational access while protecting the relationships that make it possible.
The committee is expected to continue its work and provide recommendations to legislators.
Lately, there has been a lot of negativity, frustration, and uncertainty surrounding oversized ATV registrations in Maine, as well as concerns regarding trail respect and rider behavior. While I understand those feelings, today's discussion reinforced something important: everyone in the room wants to help find a solution.
The most important thing we all need to remember is that the future of riding in Maine depends on maintaining strong relationships with the landowners who make trail access possible.
This issue impacts far more than just ATV/UTV owners and dealerships. It affects landowners, farmers, trail clubs, restaurants, lodging businesses, tourism, and countless rural Maine communities that depend on outdoor recreation.
The committee is also working on creating surveys for landowners, clubs, and trail users to help gather data and better understand the impacts of the current regulations.
I remain confident that if we continue to work together, stay respectful, and focus on facts and solutions, this issue will get ironed out.
Let's keep the conversation positive. This really isn't the place for disrespect or arguments in the comments. Let's be productive, continue supporting our local clubs and landowners, and remember that we all ultimately want the same thing: a strong future for outdoor recreation in Maine.
