The Plymouth County Education Association is an organization that has been in the forefront of education in Massachusetts since its beginnings in 1835. Originally called the Plymouth County Association for the Improvement of Common Schools, it changed its name to the Plymouth County Teachers’ Association in 1936. It was not until 1967 that it became the Plymouth County Education Association. Over

those 179 years, the organization has
-supported other professional educational associations in times of crisis.
-led the commitment to political and legislative action.
-provided financial assistance to local associations for legal fees.
-provided scholarship money to locals.
-with Horace Mann, helped found Bridgewater Normal School, now Bridgewater University. The oldest teacher training institution in the United States.
-been instrumental in the founding of the Plymouth County Teachers' Federal Credit Union.
- led the way in instituting programs, conferences, and conventions, that later were adopted by M.T.A.
-provided resources to educators so they can further their teaching careers.
-changed with the times to meet the needs of the teaching profession.
