Doug joined the Ogden Engine Co. No. 1 of the Dobbs Ferry Fire Dept (Westchester, NY) on 9-11-1990. Doug remained an active member for several years before being hired by the FDNY and relocating up north. The Ogden Engine Co. No. 1 has never forgotten Doug and has a dedicated memorial in their firehouse. We would like to thank the members of the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department for the many t-shirts purchases as well as the donations made to Doug’s scholarship fund. True Brotherhood.

Ashleigh Gillinder
PJ Class of 2004 Scholarship Recipient

Reflecting on the 20th anniversary of September 11th and the many first responders who gave the ultimate sacrifice to help others, it gives me great pride to have been a recipient of the Doug Miller Scholarship. It is a consent reminder that Mr. Miller sacrificed his life so others could recognize and fulfill their own dreams. The scholarship will always be a piece of who I am, and his gift has allowed me to fulfill so many wonderful accomplishments throughout my life.
I graduated from Port Jervis High School in 2004 and attended James Madison University in Virginia, where I majored in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources. During my four years at JMU, I made long lasting friendships, was challenged academically, and gained valuable life experiences. One of my proudest accomplishments was fulfilling a lifelong dream to study abroad in Australia. It was during my Junior year when I spent an amazing six months studying at Macquarie University outside of Sydney.
Upon graduating from JMU, I relocated to the suburbs of DC and worked for Target where I focused on product logistics, salesfloor merchandising, and leading and developing a team. From Target, I moved to Central Virginia where I joined Custom Ink, a leading screen print manufacturing facility where I currently hold the position of Optimization Manager. In this role I am focused on developing, communicating, and implementing process changes and project management.
In 2018 I got married and in 2020 my husband and I welcomed our beautiful little girl, Emma Charleigh into the world. As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, my family and I will always remember the sacrifice that Mr. Miller and so many others made for our country. May God bless.

Ricky Bedford
Port Jervis Class of 2016 Scholarship Recipient

After graduating from PJHS in 2016, Ricky went on to attend Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY studying Fire Sciences. While attending Onondaga College, Ricky took advantage of a ‘bunk-in program’ with one of the local fire departments; in exchange for room and board, he gained more experience as a fire responder by living within the firehouse. After finishing school, Ricky moved to Syracuse working for AMR Ambulance. He has also joined the Solvay Volunteer Fire Dept to continue gaining experience and taking tests, while determining where he’d like to land a career firefighting job, Syracuse being his top interest currently. Ricky said that receiving the Memorial Scholarship had helped him greatly because it allowed him to pay for a significant portion of his tuition and books.

“I really appreciate the help of this scholarship and the continuation of it for the youth in the community.”

In 2012 I was deeply honored to receive the Douglas C. Miller Memorial scholarship. The support of my community and significance of being chosen for this scholarship was humbling, and I am so grateful to the Douglas C. Miller Memorial Committee for their generosity.

Thanks to the support of the Douglas C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, I attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after my high school graduation, where I studied Design, Innovation and Society as well as Business Management. Throughout and after college, I worked in a variety of roles, ranging from working with inventors at Hasbro to testing cars, consumer electronics, and toys at Good Housekeeping Magazine. I also continued my education, earning a Master of Science at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where I currently live. Today, I work at Globant, consulting on research and product strategy while also working as Part-Time Faculty at Parsons School of Design, where I teach innovation and research methods to undergraduate students.

My education would not have been possible without the generosity and support of my community - I am forever grateful to the Douglas C. Miller Memorial Scholarship for supporting me at a young age. I send my love to the Miller family on this anniversary and always.

Thank you Selina Tedesco for sending us this. We wish you nothing but continued luck in your future endeavors.

I received this scholarship when I graduated with the Class of 2010. I went on to graduate with my Bachelors of Criminal Justice Administration from Waynesburg University in 2013, then moved on to get my Juris Doctor from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2016. I have spent most of my career volunteering and my professional career has revolved around supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. I currently work with Fearless! I am about to hit my two year mark with the agency. In my two years here I have primarily worked in a position that helps me advocate for both survivors and Law Enforcement Officers when needed.

Matt Reiley
Port Jervis Class of 2015 Scholarship Recipient

Matt Reiley graduated from Port Jervis High School in 2015. Upon high school graduation, Matt belonged to Cuddebackville Fire Department and wanted to continue to serve his community as a first responder. Receiving this scholarship was especially meaningful for Matt and truly hit close to home after losing his father at just 2 weeks old. Receiving the scholarship, Matt attended Orange County Community College - SUNY Orange for 2 years studying Criminal Justice. While attending OCCC and to help pay for school, Matt also worked full-time as a Security Office at Orange Regional Medical Center. Then in July of 2017, Matt was accepted into the Ulster County Police Academy where he was then hired by the Town of Deerpark Police Department as a part-time Police Officer for the past 4 years. He has also worked part-time for 2 years for the Town of Mount Hope Police Department, followed by becoming School Resource Officer with the City of Port Jervis Police Department. Recently, Matt got accepted to the NY State Police and will attend the NYSP Academy next month.

Matt says, “I am very thankful for the Douglas Miller Scholarship as it truly helped me make for a bright and successful future.”
