Each year, observances such as Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day offer an opportunity to pay tribute to American heroes. While the spirit of honoring courage and service is a constant across the three, each serves a unique and meaningful purpose and is observed in honor of a different group.

A Sailor's Lament

Can't write a thing
The censor's to blame
Just sign my name and
Say that I am well.

Can't tell where I sail from
Can't mention the date
Can't even number
The meals that I ate.

Don't know where I am going
Don't know when I'll land
Can't even mention
If met by a band.

Can't mention the weather
Can't say if there's rain
All military secrets
Must secrets remain.

Can't have a flashlight
To guide me at night
Can't smoke a butt
Except out of sight.

Can't keep a dairy
For such is a sin
Can't keep the envelopes
My letters come in

Can't say for sure folks
Just what I can write
So, I'll call this a letter
And close with good-night.

A Sailor's Reward

I've been sitting here and thinking
Of all the the things I've left behind,
And I hate to put on paper
What is running through my mind.

I've dredged a million bilges
And I've chipped ten miles of paint,
And a meaner place this side of hell
Well, there simply ain't.

But there is one consolation,
Gather close and I will tell.
When we die we'll go to heaven
For we have done our time in hell.

We've stood for endless hours
While waiting for our mail,
We've stood a million watches
And been on all details.

We've scrubbed a million mess halls
And peeled a billion spuds,
We've lashed ten million hammocks
And washed our dirty duds.

The number of inspections stood
Is very hard to tell
There'll be no such place in heaven
For we've served our time in hell.

We've cruised a hundred million miles
And made ten thousand ports,
We've spent the night in dirty jails,
For trying to be good sports.

But when the final taps are sounded
And the whole darn thing is over
We can take our final shore leave
And know we'll be in clover.

The angels will welcome us,
The harps begin to play
We can sign a million pay slips
To be spent in just a day.

It is then we'll hear St. Peter
Great us loudly with a yell,
"You can take a front seat, Sailor!
For you've served your time in HELL.

You Can't Tell a Vet Just By Looking
He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia
sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carrier didn't run out of fuel.
He is the barroom loudmouth whose behavior is outweighed in the cosmic scales by four hours of unparalleled bravery near the 38th Parallel in Korea.
She is the nurse who fought against futility in DaNang and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years.
He is the POW who left one person and came back another.
He is the drill instructor who has never been in combat, but has saved countless lives by turning no-accounts into Marines.
He is the parade-riding legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.
He is the white-haired guy bagging groceries at the supermarket, aggravatingly slow, who helped liberate a N**i death camp.
A vet is an ordinary and extraordinary human being-someone who offered his life's vital years in the service of his country.
He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. We will never be able to repay the debt of gratitude we owe.
