Sixty-five years ago today, a fifteen-foot trooper was unveiled at Fort Bragg, and he’s been standing watch ever since.

Iron Mike was built by hand in a Fort Bragg workshop by Army wife and sculptor Leah Hiebert and a small crew of Soldiers, using clay, steel, fiberglass and bronze powder. Soldiers never called him by his official name, “The Airborne Trooper.” They called him Iron Mike, and the name stuck.

A crew of Vietnam veterans still shows up every spring with buckets and brushes.

They kneel on the sidewalk in front of the black granite wall in Washington and scrub it clean by hand, panel by panel.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 641 started the tradition in 1996. Through 2026 that's 31 seasons of the same ritual. Scout troops, students and other volunteer groups now take their own scheduled mornings too.

This is Mutt, a French Bulldog who served with the YMCA’s Cigarette Dog delivery service during World War I. His job was simple but dangerous: carry ci******es to soldiers on the front lines with the 11th Engineers. He was wounded twice in the line of duty but kept working. When the engineers shipped home at war’s end, mascots were normally left behind — but the men refused to leave Mutt in France. They smuggled him aboard, and he made it home to New York.
