Another stop on the Long Island History Hunt brings us to one of Long Island’s finest surviving pre-Revolutionary War homes - Rock Hall Museum in Lawrence.

Built in 1767 for Josiah Martin, a wealthy West Indian plantation owner, Rock Hall is a Georgian-style home that remained in the hands of just two families - the Martins and the Hewletts - for nearly two centuries.

In 1948, the Hewlett family deeded the property to the Town of Hempstead. After an extensive restoration, Rock Hall opened as a museum in 1953 and today offers a remarkably detailed look at life inside an 18th-century home.

Visitors can explore furnished rooms along with rarely seen working spaces such as the Warming Kitchen, Cold Storage Room, and Wine Cellar.

The cellar is also home to an ongoing archaeology exhibit featuring 18th- and 19th-century artifacts uncovered during excavations on the property.

Another stop on the Long Island History Hunt takes us to Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead!

Located on 28 acres along Sound Avenue, Hallockville Museum Farm is the only living farm museum on the North Fork and preserves an important piece of Long Island’s agricultural history.

The museum stewards 19 historic buildings and helps tell the story of generations of local farming through exhibits featuring traditional farm tools, potato farming, historic trades, and everyday life on a working Long Island farm.

Today, Hallockville keeps those traditions alive through walking tours, craft workshops, beekeeping, community gardening, educational programs, and events throughout the year.
