Another stop on the Long Island History Hunt takes us to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Founded in 1838, Green-Wood is a National Historic Landmark and one of New York City’s most remarkable historic green spaces.

Its 478 acres are filled with history, art, architecture, nature, and the final resting places of more than 580,000 people. The grounds also sit within the landscape of the Battle of Long Island, the largest battle of the American Revolution fought on Long Island.

Today, Green-Wood continues to preserve the past while giving visitors a place to explore, learn, and discover something new around nearly every corner.

Another stop on the Long Island History Hunt takes us to the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building in Huntington.

Founded in 1892, the museum is operated by the Huntington Historical Society and honors the service and sacrifice of local veterans while preserving the history of the Huntington community.

While visiting, you can also learn about Patriot spy Nathan Hale, who was captured by the British in nearby Halesite during the American Revolution and later executed.

Through historic exhibits, educational programs, and preserved collections, the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building helps connect visitors with the people and events that shaped Huntington.

We’re thrilled to announce that the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation has been awarded the Greater Hudson Heritage Network’s Award for Excellence for the 2026 Long Island History Hunt!

This prestigious award is given to initiatives that “exemplify creativity and professional vision and contribute to the preservation and interpretation of the historic scene, material culture, and diversity of the region.”

The awards presentation will take place at the Hudson River Museum in October.

Many thanks to all of you who have been enjoying the History Hunt (two weeks to go!) and to the 26 wonderful museums and historic sites that have been part of this epic adventure.
