Massillon PD to Washington DC

Massillon PD to Washington DC Annual 6th Grade Trip to Washington DC. Sponsored by Henderson Lodge 105, Fraternal Order of Police; the Massillon Police Dept & Massillon City Schools.

The Massillon PD to Washington DC trip began in 1936 with the First School Patrol trip to the Annual Junior Police Jamboree held in Washington D.C.. Patrolman Royal Smith and Al Brinham, who managed the Grand Theatre, sponsored an essay contest, taking the winners to DC in their personal cars. Al later managed the Weslin theater (at the northwest corner of 1st & Lincoln Way West) where School Patr

ol students received free admission to Saturday afternoon shows by presenting their belt & badge. Over the years, the number of students attending the trip has fluctuated between 2 and 200. Presently we take approximately 80 students on two tour buses for a three day, two night trip, to our Nation’s Capitol, with a stop in Gettysburg, PA and a tour of the battlefield. The trip was originally a reward for students who served on the School Patrol for their elementary schools in the 6th grade. When the school district rearranged the grades and eventually did away with the school patrol program, we continued the tradition with the 5th grade students, as they were the last grade to use the school patrol program. Following the 2020-2022, "covid" years, we were able to move the trip back to the 6th grade, where it had started. The details of the annual trip vary from year to year, depending on our ability to gain entry into some of the buildings in DC.

Good Afternoon All, As some of you may have seen, there has been an officer involved shooting at/near the White House. This post serves as a letter to parents of our students currently on the Washington DC trip. All students and chaperones are ok and accounted for. The group was not in the area at the time of the shooting. Thank you everyone!

Greetings parents/guardians,

We are fast approaching our 6th grade Washington DC Trip and final preparations are being made.
Our parent/student/chaperone meeting will be April 21st, 7pm, at the FOE Eagles #190, 303 Weirich Blvd, NW, Massillon. Due to limited space at the Eagles, we request that only one parent/guardian and the student please attend. We will be distributing the vests and T-shirts for the trip and this will also give you the opportunity to talk with our nurses about medical issues or concerns for your student and update the medical forms if needed.
Our nurses will be handing out the vests and T-shirts by which student is assigned to them. A list was sent out to parents/guardians showing which nurse you should see at the meeting when you arrive. Check your email.
We want every student who has been signed up to go on this trip and enjoy an experience they won’t soon forget.

We still have room for about 20 more students for the 2026 trip. Spread the word around to the 6th grade parents. 80 is the goal and we had a few drop out already due to previous commitments and such that happen to fall on the same travel dates. Email for details and paperwork: [email protected].

Greetings Friends, Families & Supporters,
I hope everyone had a productive summer and is looking forward to the Annual 6th Grade Washington DC Trip, which will be here sooner than you think. The necessary paperwork for the 2026 trip can be emailed to you and can be printed out at your convenience. You may request a copy of this year’s form by email at [email protected]. The first date for turning in the permission and medical forms is October 6th. The remainder of the important dates are listed on the first page and at the bottom of the
pages to be turned in. Please do not turn in the forms or money at the school or at the Massillon PD, we will be conducting all payment and paperwork transactions at the Henderson Lodge building, 249 1st St, SE, Massillon. (Corner of 1st St, SE & Oak Ave, SE)
Our initial focus will be on gathering the paperwork to begin working on reservations and schedules, families who need more time to make payments may do so, just let us know via email.
