IF YOUR DOG GOES MISSING~ WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? Increase the odds of locating your dog by following proper protocol.

Immediately check surrounding areas such as ditches, bodies of water, and any area where your dog could have been injured, poisoned or trapped.
The FIRST person to notify is the Dog Control Officer if you still can't find your dog. This can help keep the dog from being impounded. The SECOND call should be placed to the animal shelter that contracts with your township. This will be the location where your animal will be transferred if found and could be already. The THIRD thing to do is a media blitz such as flyers, Facebook, Craigslist, newspapers, etc.

The Massena Humane Society contracts with Louisville, Norfolk, Dickinson, and Massena. All unidentified dogs from these townships will be brought to our facility. If you live outside of these areas check to see which animal shelter contracts with your town. It is not always the nearest shelter and sometimes it could even be a vet clinic or boarding facility.

(Please remember these are Dog Control Officers, not Animal Control Officers, there is a difference because they ONLY handle DOG calls). They do not handle cats, or wildlife.

We are accepting all volunteers who will now need to meet new qualification changes to Medicaid on January 1, 2027. Give us a call at 315-764-1330 and we will get you set up to volunteer, provide free online training, and also provide you with necessary paperwork to satisfy new requirements.

🖤 Meet Mina — a little black cat with a whole lot of love to give. 🖤

Mina is the kind of girl who reminds you just how special shelter cats can be. She is spayed, incredibly affectionate, and simply wants someone to love her as much as she will love them. ❤️ She would love nothing more than to leave the shelter behind and curl up in a home where she can feel safe, cherished, and truly part of the family.

Mina is patiently waiting for the person who will look into her beautiful eyes and say, “You’re coming home with me.” 🥹🏡

Effective immediately the Massena Humane Society will be managing the Dog Control position for the Town of Massena. The new DCO number is 680-239-0519 and this number will be available at all times on our answering machine. In order to provide clarity here is a refresher on when to contact Dog Control and when to contact Law Enforcement. Please be sure to contact the correct department to file proper reports efficiently and keep our animals safe.

DOG CONTROL: ARTICLE 7 NYS AG & Markets Law:
*Any dog which is not identified and NOT on owner's premises, 117.1a
*Any dog which is not licensed whether on or off the owner's property, 117.1b
*Any licensed dog not in control of owner or if there is probable cause to believe the dog is a dangerous dog, 117.1c
*Any dog which poses an immediate threat to public safety, 117.1d

**Under ARTICLE 7: The DCO has NO authority to seize, capture, or transport any animals other than dogs. The DCO has NO authority to investigate or seize or prosecute for animal cruelty or neglect complaints.
