In celebration of Halloween, the FBICCAAA revisits its Summer 2021 tour of Ohio’s Mansfield Reformatory. The now-shuttered prison is considered to be one of the most haunted sites in Ohio. For believers, it’s a place where the ghosts of abused inmates and staff with heavy consciences roam the halls. Their souls spend eternity endlessly wailing through the bars and slamming steel doors. Even without tormented spirits, the building’s vacant cells, crumbling walls, and peeling paint are eerie enough to provoke chills. Read on, if you dare….

Members of the FBICCAAA were on their best behavior as they toured the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. Eve Lapolla, former Director of the Ohio Film Commission, arranged the outing to former reform school and maximum security prison. Today, the famous Mansfield Reformatory houses the Ohio State Corrections History Museum and is a popular site for ghost hunters. However, the massive, castle-like campus is probably best known as the primary filming location for The Shankshaw Redemption.

Some tidbits from the FBICCAAA tour include:
The structure was built between 1886 and 1910. Its first purpose was to rehabilitate rebellious teenagers. The school advocated four principles: attend church in order to develop a moral compass; achieve an eighth grade education, as most individuals were at a second grade level in that day; master a trade to be able to provide for yourself; and cultivate social skills by building friendships.
Life at the institution was challenging: 1,200 residents quickly bathed within three hours total in preparation for Sunday church. And, solitary confinement was strict. A prisoner’s time in isolation did not count toward fulfilling his sentence; he wasn’t given a bed; and only one meal was provided per day. The superintendent’s theory was a lethargic, dehydrated inmate was more easier to control.

A federal court ordered the facility to close 1990 due to brutal conditions. At times, the building housed nearly three times the number of prisoners it was built to accommodate. Also, the outdated construction made living conditions stifling hot in summer, and in winter, icicles developed inside the cells.
At the end of the day, the FBICCAAA expressed its gratitude to Ms. Lapolla and presented her with our Challenge Coin.

If you want to experience prison time without committing a crime, the Ohio State Reformatory is open for public tours. Book your sentence at https://www.mrps.org/.

A "par-fect" afternoon "Top"-ped off by "tee-riffic" news coverage by WCPO 9! FBI Cincinnati Citizens Academy Alumni Association raised some “green” out on the green at Cincinnati's Topgolf, as FBICCAAA held its 4th annual fundraiser. Attendees and golfers tried their luck on the links from the bays, dined on barbeque, and enjoyed raffle baskets, Split the Pot and a silent auction. Check out Channel 9's news story for more details! The net proceeds will benefit three area agencies: End Slavery Cincinnati, Dayton's Oasis House and 1DIVINELINE2HEALTH in Columbus, as well as our Chapter. If you would like to support FBICCAAA or assist in the event's donations, click https://www.fbi-ccaaa.org/Donate. Thank you to all who sponsored, donated to, organized and participated!

The Cincinnati Division hosted about 50 young ladies from Girl Scouts of Western Ohio for an informative and hands-on introduction to careers with the FBI. At four stations set up around the Field Office, agents and staff spoke about their FBI work, answered questions about their skills and experiences and showed the tools of the trade. The girl scouts learned what clues the Evidence Response Team gathers at a crime scene, and they dusted for their own fingerprints. The young ladies had an opportunity to try out handheld radios, batons, plastic guns, and handcuffs and have their photographs taken while wearing official FBI jackets and bulletproof vests. Many of the young ladies remarked that the protective equipment was almost as heavy as their school bookbags. The scouts competed to hear which group could shout “FBI! Don’t move!” the loudest and enjoying being photographed as they detained their friends in handcuffs. In addition, the group explored official FBI vehicles, and in a more serious discussion in the training room, they learned important tips and valuable lessons about keeping themselves safe on the internet.

The girl scouts’ visit was part of the Field Office’s continuing commitment to community outreach. FBICCAAA Board members supported the program by helping the troops collect their fingerprints and put on the FBI gear. And, all of the Girl Scouts earned a Cybersecurity badge!

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio serves more than 28,000 girls and nearly 11,000 adult volunteers throughout western Ohio and southeastern Indiana. The Field Office is planning another Girl Scouts outing in 2024.
