Fall Back-Plan Ahead.
Put "9-Volt" batteries on your shopping list.
According to the American Red Cross, house fires increase between the fall and winter months with peaks in December and January. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that about 890 people die in winter house fires each year.
Mason Scouts BSA Troop 141 urges you to change the batteries in your smoke detector when we "Fall Back" the clocks on November 1st.

Mason Scouts BSA Troop 141 is putting up these signs today on behalf of Mason-Dansville Coats For Kids. The purpose of Coats For Kids, undertaken by our area churches, is to ensure that everyone who needs a winter coat has one- FREE!
If YOU don't need a coat, there are still 3 ways you can help support this effort:
1) If you know of someone who needs a coat, inform them of this event and encourage them to go.
2) Provide transportation to someone who needs a coat but doesn't have transportation.
3) There are those who, because of pride, embarrassment won't go. You can go in their place.
On Saturday, October 24th from 8am to 2pm at St. James Catholic Church children and adult coats will be provided for free. Children hats, gloves & snow pants will also be available for free.
For more information contact Lori Crooks at 517-896-4090.

Scouting featured in upcoming episode of MacGyver:

A recent episode of the CBS action series MacGyver confirms what we've long hoped: the problem-solving, day-saving hero is a Scouting volunteer.

Do you have a U.S. Flag that is no longer fit to fly? Worried about how to properly dispose of it? HERE'S THE SOLUTION: The Flag Depository outside the Mason Historical Museum, the corner of Barnes and Oak.

Mason Scouts BSA Troop 141 in partnership with Mason American Legion Post 148 maintains this U.S. Flag Depository on the north side of the Museum facing Oak St.

Simply deposit your flag inside. Twice a year, BSA Troop 141 performs a public Retirement Ceremony with a representative number of the flags. The remainder are properly and respectfully disposed of in private ceremony.

Friday and Saturday nights (Feb 14 & 15) Scouts BSA Troop 141 at Bay City State Park on Saginaw Bay ... tent camping. We arrived about 8:30pm Friday and set up the tents by the light of our headlamps. The overnight temps dipped to 9º. Saturday night, we experienced a heatwave and the lows only reached 29º — a massive 20 degrees warmer!

We were there for the Bay City Winterfest. The Scouts got to make ice fishing poles, craft "snow snakes", got to try ice fishing and then attended a fillet demonstration where they filleted a fish, then got to eat it after dipping it in batter and deep-frying it.

Aside from that, was what each Scout learned on the outing. An overall lesson for all is that a "check list" can be a vital tool to ensure you remember everything such as a hat and a mess kit. One Scout learned the value of testing your equipment at home and ensuring you know exactly how it sets up and operates. When it's 15 degrees and dark is not the time to set up a tent with which you are unfamiliar. All in all, lots of lessons learned. Lessons that will serve these young men well the rest of their lives.

This week-end pretty much wrapped up our deep-winter camping. The March outing will be an indoor rock climbing event and the April camp out should be rather mild compared to what we experienced in January and February.

Panning For Gold.

Last summer, Scouts BSA Troop 141 joined up with the Michigan Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America at Barkus Park Campground in Lyons, MI. The Scouts learned the basic technique of gold panning and tried their luck in Stoney Creek.

Five of our troop found gold! Just part of another adventure with Scouts BSA troop 141.
