Yesterday afternoon saw significant activity with a lightning-sparked small grass fire being reported by a passerby. A coordinated response involving Ansley Fire and Rescue, Litchfield Fire and Rescue, and Mason City Volunteer Fire and Rescue was activated, and the fire was quickly brought under control. The responders returned just in time to participate in training in Ansley, where they explored the capabilities of their pumpers and grass rigs in drafting. Mason City Volunteer Fire and Rescue would like to thank Ansley Fire and Rescue and Litchfield Fire and Rescue for the mutual aid assist on a fire occurring yesterday (4/12/26). The fire appeared to start from a bird in power lines just a mile west of Mason city. Approximately 10 acres burned before the fire was contained. Smoke is still present in some areas but fire is contained to those small spots.

We would also like to mention that Ansley will be holding a in-house drafting class this coming Wednesday (4/15/26) ! For the Ansley and Mason city departments.

At yesterday's monthly meeting, new firefighters had the opportunity to try out SCBA's and get accustomed to the equipment before heading to fire school this year. The replacement of old air tanks with the latest models is also moving forward, pending successful valve replacements, which will lead to more upgrades and the elimination of soon-to-be outdated tanks.

Mason City Volunteer Fire and Rescue would also like to remind you that we are still in a open burn ban for our district. Once we get more moisture and greener vegetation coming back, we will reevaluate our position. Thank you for your understanding.

04/03/2026

Even with the Governor lifting the burn ban, Mason City Fire District will NOT be issuing any burn permits until further notice. That being said, there is no open burning in our District. Thank you for your understanding.
