๐Ÿคข From garbage to GORGEOUS โœจ

When we found the Historic YWCA at State and Adams it had no heat. No plumbing. Over 50 partition walls had carved a once-grand landmark into a maze of forgotten rooms. It was close โ€” very close โ€” to being lost forever.

This room alone was three cramped spaces with dropped ceilings and active mold. For years during our restoration it was where we staged our demo debris. Garbage bags, broken materials, despair.

Today itโ€™s one of the most beautiful rooms in Mason City.

We took down the walls, remediated the mold, and opened it back up the way it was meant to be โ€” light pouring in from three directions, every inch of trim recreated board by board from 1918 documentation. The tin ceiling is new, chosen intentionally to honor the women who built this place.

Women like Lydia Barrett. May MacNider. Carrie Chapman Catt. Mason City suffragettes who believed a building like this could change lives. They were right. We donโ€™t take that lightly.

Weโ€™ve watched what happened to Mohawk Square. We refuse to let the Historic YWCA meet the same fate.

On May 9th, the Historic YWCA at State and Adams comes alive for the Spring Art Crawl 2026.
The main gallery will host a stunning travel photography exhibition by Minneapolis photographer Carole Wilson. Throughout the building, studio spaces will showcase an incredible lineup of artists โ€” Andrea Blackmon, fiber artist flying in from Washington DC; Macy Taylor, multidisciplinary artist; Shane Taylor, rustic wood assemblage; Kellilynn Robitaille, fused glass artist; Christy Harp, painter and designer; Susanne Crane, painter and writer โ€” and more.

Shop one-of-a-kind Motherโ€™s Day gifts, enjoy food trucks, and let the kids loose in the family activity spaces. This is a come-as-you-are, stay-as-long-as-you-want kind of day.

This very room will be hosting a massage therapy pop-up all day. Treat yourself. Treat Mom. Youโ€™ve earned it.

Building tour at 3pm โ€” hear the full story of what it took to save this place.

Cap the night with Elisha Marin and friends playing live at the Principal Pavilion, 7โ€“8pm.

Free and open to all. May 9, 10amโ€“5pm.

๐Ÿ“ฃ And soon โ€” this room becomes yours. This stunning, light-filled suite with windows in three directions and two separate entrances will be available for rent as office space very soon. If youโ€™ve been looking for a workspace that actually inspires you, stay tuned.

๐Ÿ€โœจ Bringing History Back to Life at the YWCA โœจ๐Ÿ€

Big things are happening in the historic gymnasium! Artist & woodworker Ian Podgorniak has been hard at work sanding and restoring the original 1918 gym floorsโ€”and letโ€™s just say, this has been no small task!

When we started this project, the original hardwood was completely hidden under layers of tile flooring and plywood, held down by thousands of nails that had to be removed one by one. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ After a ton of painstaking effort, this incredible floor is finally seeing the light of day again. As we have matched the original ceiling and wall colors, we will be bringing this floor back to its original cherry color soon. ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŽถโœจ This gymnasium once had a stage for hosting dances, events, and live music. Many local bands have performed here over the years, and even big names like Peter, Paul & Mary graced this space ๐Ÿ™‚ We are looking forward to bringing this space back to the community as an intimate historic venue.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Amazing Community! ๐ŸŒŸโค๏ธ

Last weekend's event was truly special. To all who walked through those historic doors to witness our progress, share cherished stories, and offer words of encouragement, you filled our hearts. The tales of the Ninth Grade Lounge, memories of the pool, and countless other moments that the YWCA hosted over the years are the lifeblood of this project.

We're calling on everyone who has a story, a photograph, or any artifact from the YWCA's illustrious history in Mason City to share it with us. ๐Ÿ’Œ We want to record and treasure every memory, ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty and legacy of this place. Please email [email protected] or give Elisha a call at (507) 318-2798. Your contributions will be an invaluable part of preserving our shared history.

Our mission is vast, but with every pair of helping hands and every dollar donated, we're a step closer to restoring this Mason City gem. ๐Ÿ’Ž If you're inspired by our journey so far and wish to be part of this legacy, please consider donating at www.SaveTheY.com. Every dollar goes directly to breathing life back into this magnificent building and preserving a pivotal piece of our community's story. ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ›

๐Ÿ“œ A Century of Women's Empowerment: The YWCA Building in Mason City ๐Ÿ“œ

In 1918, Mason City's YWCA was more than just a buildingโ€”it was a groundbreaking initiative for women's welfare, providing a safe space for the over 900 young women employed in the city. The building was a first-of-its-kind in the community with a swimming pool and dorms specifically designed for young women. ๐ŸŒน

๐ŸŽจ Art Meets History ๐ŸŽจ

Fast forward to today, we're transforming this historic gem into a dynamic mixed-use space that includes artist-designed apartments, studios, and a nonprofit gallery under the umbrella of Mason City's newest 501c3 arts nonprofit, Yes! We Create Art. ๐ŸŽญ

๐Ÿค We Need Your Help ๐Ÿค

We need community support to preserve this historic landmark. Help us revitalize and preserve this important part of our community's history.
