This week we had the great pleasure of visiting the Oshki Ikwewag Ojibwe women’s farm on Madeline Island in Lake Superior. While in Wisconsin we enjoyed a productive summit with other Indigenous land protectors hosted by Akiing, a community development initiative focused on restoring the Anishinaabe economy, and Winona LaDuke. Winona operates the farm with the specific purpose of teaching Indigenous women how to farm. NLC is temporarily holding title to the 8.5 acer farm to eventually be transferred to Oshki Ikwewag once the foundation is fully established.
The island is named for Madeline Cadotte, an Ojibwe woman who lived there in the 19th century. The original Anishinaabe name for the island is Mooningwanekaanling, in reference to the flicker, a bird that continues to thrive there unlike many Anishinaabe who have been dispossessed of their ancestral lands.
It is Winona's intention to recover more land on Mooningwanekaanling so the Anishinaabe can return.

For more than 30 years Hawk Henries has been hand tooling flutes from various types of wood adding spectacular carved elements and designs that issue smooth clear tones. Last weekend NLC was fortunate to have the Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck citizen conduct a workshop guiding a small but eager group of Wampanoag and Nipmuck students making their own bamboo flutes. Hawk brought tools and provided all supplies needed for the task. In between instructing Hawk inspired the group randomly playing some of his own Emmy winning compilations. He has performed at powwows and festivals across the country, and Hawk’s flutes are on exhibit in many museums including a new installation in the National Museum of Music in South Dakota.
The workshop was made even sweeter on day two when Clan Mothers Marlene Lopez and Anita “Mother Bear” Peters joined and shared tips on finger weaving and leather work.

If you are in our area next Tuesday, consider spending your lunch hour with us to help clean up an epic amount of litter along Meeting House Road. The roadside directly abuts the Mashpee River and threatens the quality of that precious resource. We will be staged at the Johansen Conservation Area across from 108 Meetinghouse Road from 11 am to 2 pm with bags and gloves and insect repellant.

We are honored to welcome back our Chaubunagugamaug friend Hawk Henries, this time for a workshop on Flute Making. There are still a few openings for this teaching on May 16 and 17. The workshop is exclusively for people with tribal affiliations who are interested in carrying on this cultural tradition.

Trails throughout the region suffered tremendous damage this winter after the historic Blizzard Hernando. Volunteers will be gathering at Simpkins Bog, land that is in NLC care in Yarmouth, to remove debris and restore the trails that cut through the abandoned bog. Pack a lunch, insect repellant, and any personal tools you may want to bring.

Kutâputunumuw to all the chefs and all the judges who made this year's Taste of the Earth Contest a wonderful success. A special shout out goes to CAI for sponsoring the event and Elspeth Hay of the Local Food Report who served as the MC. The cooks really outdid themselves with culinary delights created using only plant based foods. While everyone was a winner, Sue Sullivan of the Barnstable Land Trust won third place and was awarded a basket of traditional foods. Second place went to Sherry Pocknett for her spring power bowl served by her nephew Aquinnah Lopes Pocknett, and Kitty Hendricks Miller took home a first place award of hand coiled pottery made by our founder and board president Ramona "Nosapocket" Peters for her very popular two bean dip and chips.

On Saturday we partnered once again with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's Natural Resources Department to host the third annual Honor the Earth Fair and the turnout was the best ever. We were so thrilled with all who came out to experience more than 50 vendors and exhibitors, so many activities for children, another great Taste of the Earth cooking contest sponsored by CAI, and we closed things out with the Wampanoag Nation Singers and Dancers. There was so much going on it would be impossible to share it all, but please enjoy this glimpse into our day.
